DNV GL and French oil major Total have initiated a joint industry project in cooperation with several industry partners to explore how hybridization in tanker shipping and, specifically, auxiliary engines on small tankers, can reduce operational costs and improve environmental performance. 

Engine room crew perform their duties in an extremely demanding working environment; high temperatures and pressure systems. Despite of taking all the precautions and safety measures, while handling engine room machinery systems, accidents do happen! 

The industry has mostly shed its focus on navigational safety or pollution prevention; however, the issues related to engine rooms and installations should not be disregarded considering that many accidents have been reported due to engine failures, loss of power or other engineering related causes.

Contaminated IFO 380 bunkers in the US Gulf have resulted in a significant number of vessels experiencing system clogging and, in more extreme cases, engine damage, North Club warned. The contamination has been linked to the use of fuel oil cutter stock, a product added to residual fuels to reduce viscosity.

The Swedish Club suggests vessel operators to always look to the long term, when deciding what type of engines to install across the fleet. Latest statistics from the Club show that vessels propelled by medium/high speed engines have a claims frequency 2.5 times higher than slow speed engines, with an average claims cost close to $650,000.

Fincantieri announced the float out of the ocean cruise ship "Viking Jupiter", which was built for Viking. The cruise ship is equipped with scrubbers and has energy efficient engines to meet with strict environmental regulations. The ship will have a gross tonnage of about 47,800 tons, 465 cabins with accommodation for 930 passengers.

The Diesel Technology Forum and the Environmental Defense Fund released a report highlighting the emission reduction benefits that can be offered by the latest clean diesel models. The joint research estimates that replacing older engines in a tug boat with the latest clean diesel model that meets the latest emissions milestones can reduce on average 14.9 tons of NOx emissions per year.

The US Energy Department’s Vehicle Technologies Office released a multi-topic funding opportunity announcement (FOA). The funding, which will be $12 million, regards the Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines. The funding will have two topics: Multi-Mode Optimized Fuel/Engine System Development; Bioblendstocks to Optimize Mixing Controlled Compression Ignition Engines.

The US EPA announced the availability of grant funding to modernize the country's diesel fleet by retrofitting or replacing vehicles with cleaner, more efficient diesel engines. Through its Diesel Emission Reduction Program, EPA anticipates awarding approximately $40 million to eligible applicants.

MSIU issued a report analyzing the probable causes of the main engine damage on the RoRo cargo ship 'Chodziez', while en route from Oran, Algeria, to Marseille, France, in March 2017. The investigation concluded that the oil mist alarm was triggered by a mist of oil, which was generated by a hot spot, following the failure of the bearing shells.
