This has led to increased activity of armed gangs, with instances of gunfire, robbery and kidnapping, NorthStandard highlights. 

Due to the escalating situation in the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea regions, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) has issued a circular to inform that heightened military activity and geopolitical tensions in these areas continue to pose serious threats to commercial vessels.

The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) has issued a circular to provide guidance on how to conduct functional testing of the ship security alert systems onboard. According to SOLAS Regulation XI2/6, all vessels subject to Security Regulations, shall be provided with a ship security alert system. 

The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) has issued a new marine security notice to inform about the situation in the Red Sea. Although, no restrictions are imposed by the BMA or Bahamas government on transiting the Red Sea, such transits are currently considered extremely high risk. BMA  recommends ships to use the Maritime Security Transit Corridor (MSTC) to benefit from the military presence and surveillance.

Recently, China Classification Society (CCS) issued the first type approval certificate in China for the computer monitoring and alarm system that meets the requirements of IACS URE27 to Supcon Ocean Technology (Zhejiang) Co.

On 9 January, BIMCO, INTERPORTPOLICE, INTERMANAGER, the World Shipping Council and Northeast Maritime Institute held a conference in Houston to discuss the rise in drug smuggling using ships and the abuse of seafarers. 

Due to the ongoing security situation in Israel, there is an increased risk for vessels operating in and around ports in Israel and its territorial waters, the Liberian Ship Registry stresses in a new security advisory. 

Due to recent threats from Yemen's Houthi rebels, the Panama Maritime Administration strongly recommends all Panama-flagged vessels to take all security measures and avoid transiting the Red Sea, with increased caution through the Strait of Bab al Mandeb.
