Environmental regulations continue challenging shipowners

New Year’s Resolutions from ICS

Mr. Peter Hinchliffe, Secretary-General, ICS has responded to GREEN4SEA questions providing an overall forecast for the marine environmental developments in 2017. Mr Hinchliffe said that one of the most difficult issues facing ICS is to develop a widespread response to the growing call at IMO for commitment with the Paris Agreement and wished for all stakeholders in the supply chain to become eager to share the burden and the responsibility for a better marine environment.

Roulakis, Blank Rome, notes that vessel owners and operators worldwide continue to face criminal liability for safety-related incidents, therefore, it is key to have strategies to mitigate risk. While vessels have response plans in the case of serious incidents, many companies do not. Mr. Roulakis highlights how critical is to develop a management response plan for mitigating risk.

New SOLAS requirements for lifeboat servicing

Michael Røssland, Norsafe Academy, focuses on the new resolution and amendments to SOLAS approved by IMO regarding requirements for periodic service of lifesaving equipment. Mr Røssland explaina that this resolution requires documented competency and approval of personnel conducting services and outlined necessary actions for vessels, shipowners, flag, class and servicing companies to comply.
