Norway's Petroleum Safety Authority has completed its investigation of the fatal accident onboard the drilling rig 'Maersk Interceptor', on 7 December 2017, where one person was killed and another seriously injured. The investigation revealed several breaches of safety regulations.

Six stevedore workers were transported to hospital, after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning while onboard a vessel at Napier Port, New Zealand, Monday night. According to local media reports, there was a problem with a turbo unit that resulted in accumulated fumes poisoning the workers who were in the ship’s hold.

Transport Malta's MSIU issued an investigation report on the fatal fall of a crew man onboard the Maltese-registered bulk carrier 'Pompano', in Port Hedland Anchorage, Australia, in April 2017. The investigation found that the crew member lost his footing and grip whilst carrying out repairs on the ladder. 

In April 2017, an electrician onboard the Maltese registered bulk carrier 'Abyo Audrey' suffered fatal injuries while working inside the elevator shaft. MSIU issued a report on the accident, revealing that the entry into the elevator shaft without being assisted and in communication with other crew member, was a contributing factor. 

ClassNK has released its Guidelines for Use of Drones in Class Surveys, incorporating the applicable range and procedures for use of drones in class surveys, the technical considerations for safe operation and the requirements for drone service suppliers. As drone-related technologies are improving at an extremely rapid pace, application in diverse fields is increasingly expected. 

The Republic of Marshall Islands issued a circular citing requirements for shipboard occupational health and safety programs and informing of restrictions on work that is considered hazardous to seafarers under 18 years old, in line with MLC. It is prohibited to engage a seafarer under 18 years old in work that is considered hazardous.

The Republic of Marshall Islands issued a marine notice, setting out the revised requirements for hot work, including all ships, not just tank ships and combination carriers. Hot Work involves sources of ignition or temperature sufficiently high enough to cause the ignition of a flammable gas mixture.

Using a drone to connect the towline to an assisted vessel will drastically improve the safety margin of tug operations, as this will avoid the need for manoeuvring in the so-called danger zone, the company explains.

The body of the man was found floating at the port of Jakarta, after he fell overboard from a vessel during stevedoring operations. This accident comes in addition to the deaths of two workers within two months and four within the past 15 months at the Hutchison’s terminal, unions say.
