Read moreUK P&I Club Legal Briefing The UK P&I Club has issued new Legal Briefing regarding the air pollution regulations.Air pollution from ships has been in the spotlight over recent years due to its increasing impact on the natural environment. The outcome has been a series of new regulations to limit exhaust and other atmospheric emissions from ships globally, regionally and nationally.MARPOL Annex VI sets global limits on ship exhaust emissions together with provisions for stricter emission control areas. For example in the North American Emissions Control Area, where the sulphur content of maritime fuel was limited to 1% in 2012, two UK Club members vessels have already been fined for not switching to low-sulphur fuel.By 18th June 2014 all European Union member states are expected to implement directive 2012/33/EU, which brings European national air pollution laws in line with MARPOL Annex VI. They and other countries are also introducing regulations which go beyond MARPOL Annex VI requirements.Ship owners need to be fully aware of the growing and stricter atmospheric emissions measures being introduced around the world. This update summarises the global, regional and national regulations currently in force and proposed. Ship owners should be aware of the growing and stricter ...

Read moreEnsuring efficient enforcement of stricter requirements for ships' sulphur emissions Compliance with the regulations is of importance to the environment. But, at the same time it is important to Danish shipping that no shipowners get a competitive advantage by speculating in cheating with the content of the fuel. Therefore, efficient and consistent enforcement of compliance with the regulations is decisive. This is the reason for presenting an action plan today that contains a number of specific initiatives. The action plan is an extension of the Danish Government's Plan for Growth in the Blue Denmark, which contains an initiative entitled "Improved enforcement nationally and globally".The initiatives have been identified in dialogue with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the Danish Shipowners' Association, and continued cooperation is envisaged. The action plan is based on four focus areas: International cooperation, the development and use of new technology, improved statistics and documentation on non-compliance as well as sanctions. The action plan is based on four focus areas:International cooperationNew technologyImproved statistics and documentationSanctions"With the action plan, Denmark takes an important step in the struggle to ensure efficient enforcement of the sulphur regulations. Read moreFrom the UK Chamber of Shipping Annual Review 2013-14 Global climate change is not a side issue to our industry and world trade - it is of fundamental importance. The potential impact of changing weather patterns, sea levels and temperatures poses potentially enormous social, economic and political challenges for many regions across the world.Slowing down or reversing the level of carbon emissions remains the most important environmental issue the world faces, and every sector of industry must share responsibility in trying to achieve this.Environmental regulation is, of course, a necessary mechanism to help deliver effective reductions in carbon emissions and other pollutants. Nonetheless, regulators face significant challenges in pursuing an holistic policy approach that ensures the complex range of environmental measures are effective in their ultimate goal and that their overall impact - on the environment, society and industry - is fully assessed.Sustainability is a key issue for the sector. Acknowledging its importance to the global shipping industry, sustainable maritime development was the key theme at the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) World Maritime Day 2013 on 26 September. However, sustainable development covers both social and economic sustainability as well as environmental sustainability. While environmental regulatory frameworks are a necessary and ...
