IBIA has welcomed the agreement by IMO’s Sub Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 12) to draft Interim Guidance on the carriage of blends of biofuels and MARPOL Annex I cargoes by conventional bunker ships.

The IMO’s Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response agreed on the draft 2025 Action Plan to Address Marine Plastic Litter from Ships.

The twelfth session of the IMO The Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR) took place 27 – 31 January 2025 in London, where key matters regarding the prevention of marine pollution were discussed. 

The Clean Arctic Alliance has urged the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to adopt a mandatory regulation mandating the use of distillate fuels by ships operating in and near the Arctic.

The eleventh session of IMO's Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 11), took place 19 – 23 February, where discussions on prevention of pollution in the marine environment took place prior to agreement by the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).

To reduce the risk of large nurdle spills experienced in recent years, the regulatory work is now focusing on packaging requirements for plastic pellets within the freight container, notification to the carrier so that containers containing plastic pellets can be identified quickly to aid recovery, and stowage requirements for containers containing plastic pellets, argues Mrs. Kim Jefferies, Special Adviser, Arendal. 

The IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 10), that took place 24-28 April 2023, focused on ways to reduce shipping emissions, among other issues. In particular, IMO discussed about measures to reduce the impact on the Arctic of Black Carbon emissions. With regards to Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions, the Sub-Committee agreed a draft scope of work for submission to MEPC 80. 

The IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 10), 24-28 April 2023, agreed a draft MEPC circular on recommendations for the carriage of plastic pellets by sea in freight containers. It also focused on fishing gear loss prevention.

The IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 10), 24-28 April 2023, agreed to a draft Protocol for verification of ballast water compliance monitoring devices, to be submitted to MEPC 80 for approval. 

The IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 10), 24-28 April 2023, approved the revised Guidelines for the control and management of ships' biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species, following a comprehensive review of the Guidelines.
