AW-Energy, the Finnish wave energy developer, has completed the construction of the first commercial 350 kW WaveRoller unit, which is prepared for deployment at Peniche in Portugal. The device converting ocean wave energy to electricity, functions in near-shore locales at depths of 8 to 20 meters and the mechanism can be partially or entirely submerged depending on tidal conditions.

The Portuguese Government approved the construction of Vasco da Gama Terminal in the Port of Sines and also the expansion of the existing Terminal XXI. Both plans will increase capacity in Port of Sines' containerised cargo sector, while also enable the terminal to handle the existing demand.

Portugal and Sines Port Authority have agreed regarding the expansion and completion of the third phase of the Terminal XXI expansion works. The overall project is expected to cost a total of €547 million. Terminal XXI will now have a 1,950-metre quay, as well as a 60-hectare storage area. This will enable the capacity to be increased from 2.3 million TEU, to 4.1 million.

The Portuguese Ports of Lisbon and Setúbal/Sesimbra have installed a Vessel Traffic Service solution, manufactured by Wärtsilä. The systems aim to enhance the efficiency of these ports by reducing waiting time for vessels and allowing just-in-time pilotage. The VTS software has extensive functionalities, and the solution is modular, scalable, and accessible for future upgrade developments.

The crew of Venezuelan oil tanker 'Rio Arauca' is set to be dismissed, almost two years after being stuck in the middle of the river Tagus in Lisbon due to unpaid debt, according to managers Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM). The Rio Arauca arrived in Lisbon in May 2017, but has been inactive and unable to dock since then.

Portugal's authorities seized 3.3 tonnes of cocaine and arrested 11 people off the country's Atlantic coast, after boarding a drug smuggling ship on the high seas, 150 nautical miles off the country’s coast. The seizure is estimated to to be worth around $148 million at European street prices.

Portugal’s Minister of Sea Ana Paula Vitorino presented, on January 30, the first edition of the newly-formed 'Bluetech Accelerator'. 'Bluetech Accelerator – Ports & Shipping 4.0' i aims to accelerate maritime-related start-ups. This first edition of the program has as aim the digitization of the port sector, shipping and maritime logistics.

According to the Portuguese Mobility and Transport Authority, the cargo that was handled in mainland Portugal experienced a 4.4% decrease year-on-year until November to 84.9 million tonnes, with Aveiro and Faro in a counter-cycle.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company through its freight operator Medway in Iberia, is making a significant investment in the construction of Portugal’s largest dry port to address the growing needs of exporters and shippers in the north of the country. Construction will begin as soon as the required licences have been approved and is expected to be operational by March 2020.
