Busan Port Authority marked the achievement of container traffic volume of 20 million TEU with a ceremony on the December 26th in order to express its gratitude to port and logistics industry workers for their hard work.

India’s total containerized cargo capacity of 8.75 million TEUs at all its 12 major ports is less than a quarter of containerized goods handled at China’s single port of Shanghai, making it imperative for the country "to do a fast catching up", noted India's ASSOCHAM in a new report.

Effective from 1 January 2018, the import and export handling tariff for non-transshipment containers at the Port of Shanghai will be lowered by 19.4% to RMB480 per 20-foot equivalent unit. Moody’s expects this move to negatively impact profitability and cash flow generation capability.

HMM announced that its cargo processing at Busan Port, the largest sea gateway in Korea, has hit a new record, as the company handled 167,018 TEUs of cargo through the port in July, increased by 93 percent year-over-year.  

The Port of Gdansk Authority announced that the 1st half of 2017 was a record in terms of transshipments, achieving a value several percent higher than in the same period of 2016. The increase was noted in fuels and general cargo, particularly containers and ro-ro type cargo.

The Georgia Ports Authority recently announced that it showed double digit growth in total cargo in February 2017, moving 2.94 million tons across all docks – a 10 percent increase over February 2016, and second only to January’s 3.01 million tons.

The Port of Virginia has announced that moved 220,376 TEUs in February, 351 TEUs lower than February 2016, but placing its fiscal-year-to-date growth at 6.9 percent. The continued growth comes as the port has started the engineering and survey work on its capacity expansion plan at VIG.

The Port of Long Beach has announced that reduced economic activity in Asia associated with the Lunar New Year contributed to lower February container volumes at the port. Overall, traffic showed a decline of 11.2 percent compared to the same month last year.

US major retail container ports should see double-digit year-over-year increases for the next two months as a growing economy increases the demand for affordable merchandise, according to the the National Retail Federation. Specifically, the first half of 2017 is expected to total 9.7 million TEU, up 7.4 percent from the first half of 2016.

Throughput of freight in Rotterdam fell in 2016 by 1.1% to 461.2 million tonnes, the Port of Rotterdam says. The fall can largely be attributed to dry bulk such as ores and coal while liquid bulk managed to hold on to the high level reached in 2015.
