The Port of Virginia’s Wider, Deeper, Safer project to deepen and widen the Norfolk Harbor’s commercial shipping channels has secured full federal authorization. This project will make the Port of Virginia the deepest port on the US East Coast. The dredge work will deepen the inner harbor’s commercial channels to 55 feet deep and the channel in the Chesapeake Bay to 56 feet deep.

The Port of Virginia will be equipped with sixteen hybrid shuttle carriers by Kalmar, part of Cargotec, in an effort to reduce its fuel consumption and emissions as well as engine noise levels.
