ESPO congratulated Port of Rotterdam, Port of Le Havre and Port of Piraeus for renewing their EcoPorts’ environmental management standard. PERS certifications imply that a port is effectively monitoring the environmental challenges and is implementing an improved environmental management.

The Piraeus Port Authority and Hellenic Coast Guard authorities are searching for a man, after he reportedly fell overboard from the RoRo passenger ship 'Blue Horizon', while the ship was docked in the port of Piraeus, in the evening hours of 23 May. 

The crew of the ferry "Ag. Nektarios" rescued a woman who was spotted five nautical miles off the port of Piraeus. The woman was transported to a hospital, where she is currently being treated, as she was in shock. It is not known how the woman ended up in the sea. However, her health is good, despite being in shock.

After FOBAS tested a number of samples from the ports of Piraeus and Volos, it found out that the Total Sediment Potential was above the specified ISO 8217 limit of 0.10% mass. The TSP results of these fuel samples range from 0.17 – 0.24% mass, while other fuel parameters presented satisfactory results.

The port of Piraeus experienced its best year in terms of financial results, with a turnover of € 111.5 million compared to € 103.5 million in 2016, representing a 7.7% increase. Profit before tax amounted to € 21.2 million compared to € 11.0 million in the year 2016, showing an increase of 92% and the net result is shown improved by 68.6%.

The European Union and Italian authorities are investigating a suspected tax fraud by Chinese criminals, who are reportedly importing goods through Greece’s largest port of Piraeus, which is considered a trade gateway between China and Europe. The European Anti-Fraud Office is also working with Italy on the investigation.

Currently the Port of Rotterdam serves as the gateway to Europe. A point from where incoming cargo is distributed across the European hinterland. However with the new ‘Silk Road Railway’, the port will change from a gateway to a final destination. China considers Rotterdam to be ‘the long way round’ and wants to find a shortcut.

Greece's largest port Piraeus, entered a new era after handling 20,000 TEU vessels earlier this week, as COSCO Shipping Taurus giga container vessel, one of the biggest in the world, docked in the port. Taurus is the largest vessel to dock at Piraeus Container Terminal.

China is currently carrying out its large foreign policy project, called Belt and Road Initiative. In the concept of this policy, Chinese companies are making big investments at European ports, hoping to connect Europe and Asia enhance China's power.

Piraeus Port Authority released its Annual Financial Report 2017 according to which PPA's turnover amounted to € 111.5 million compared to € 103.5 million in 2016, showing an increase of 7.7%. The profits showed an increase of 92% and the net result is improved by 68.6% to € 11.3 million compared to € 6.7 million of the year 2016.
