The City of Oakland has cancelled a lease agreement for a coal terminal which had raised controversy. The city said the it cancelled the project because of a lack of progress on the ground. The terminal was in courts from 2016, when Oakland voted to ban ship coal using city land.

Despite the conflict between US and China concerning tariffs, the Port of Oakland keeps on having a steady cargo volume growth for a third year straight. However, it is of a great interest whether the steady flow can last in the future. The Port of Oakland addressed that its import volume is up 2.7% in comparison to 2017.

The Port of Oakland announces the development and operation of the world’s latest next-generation cold storage and logistics facility, Cool Port; a temperature controlled transload and distribution facility to maximize use of the Port’s road, rail, and shipping network to increase the import and export of perishable food products. 

In a bid to ease daytime crowding and accelerate containerized cargo deliveries, Port of Oakland's second-largest marine terminal, TraPac, has introduced full service night gates for harbor truckers. TraPac announced it will operate night gates for freight haulers every Monday-through-Thursday.

Port of Oakland reported a record-breaking peak season. Last month was the busiest September for import cargo in the port's history, which followed another all-time record in August. The Port of Oakland handled 168,289 TEUs loaded import containers in the past two months. That surpassed the previous August-September record

Four ship-to-shore cranes at Oakland International Container Terminal, are now 27 feet taller after completing a year-long, crane-raising project. The fourth and final raised crane went back into service last week and is ready to serve larger ships with containers stacked high above vessel decks.

The Port of Oakland has allocated $70,000 to a local non-profit to prepare local workers for careers in the environmental construction trades. This initiative aims to promote energy efficiency, and solar industries and will support the Port in its development projects.

The port of Oakland launched a new tech platform, called the Oakland Portal, which is expected to provide a single point of entry to seaport operations. The platform is believed to be an industry first in the digitalization of the containerized cargo transportation.

Port of Oakland informed that the containerized cargo volume moving through Oakland is expected to increase 2% per year for the next five years.  This will be boosted by a $700 million injection of capital from outside investors. The investment in facilities and infrastructure aims to boost Oakland’s global trade status.

According to the plan, Oakland cargo volume should reach 2.6 million 20-foot containers by 2022. The plan also calls for 8% more containerized cargo volume in Oakland by 2022. Furthermore, a key element of the strategic plan will be reducing diesel emissions.
