The COVID-19 pandemic could permanently alter container transportation practices and the whole supply chain, was the key message of Oakland maritime officials speaking to the Harbor Trucking Association last week.

The port of Oakland's Business Development Manager Andrew Hwang discussed about the new normal after the CPVOD-19 pandemic and cautioned that the pandemic could permanently alter container transportation practices.

A longshore worker fell to his death from the deck of a container ship while at berth at the US Port of Oakland. The Port expressed its condolences and said the fatal accident was under investigation by local authorities.

After days of remaining off Californian coast, the cruise ship Grand Princess berthed at the Port of Oakland to disembark its passengers. A total of 21 people onboard the ship have been found positive to COVID-19.

Following the ongoing COVID-19 situation, 21 people onboard "Grand Princess" cruise ship have been infected by the virus. Several days ago, the cruise vessel's passengers were inside their cabins, waiting for the tests results.

Port of Oakland containerized import volume increased 7.3% last month over January 2019 totals. Exports also grew, lifting hopes for recovery from a US-China trade war. However, the Port is concerned about the potential implications due to the coronavirus.

Port of Oakland reported that its 2019 container volumes declined from 2018, but on the contrary its loaded import and export containers were at a record high. Specifically, the port's container volumes decreased by 1.8%, in comparison to 2018, while attributing to a 13% decline in empty container handling. 

US West Coast's six largest ports sent a letter to US President Donald Trump alerting about the impacts of the trade war between the US and China, adding that the escalating tension will affect ports' economies, workers, residents and international partnerships.

The US Port of Oakland announced it saw a 20% increase in its refrigerated export volume in the past year, handling 119,756 TEUs of refrigerated exports from August 2018 through July 2019, which was up from 99,740 in the same period a year ago.
