The European Council decided to prolong the mandate of the EUNAVFOR ATALANTA and the EUTM Somalia until 28 February 2027.

Operation ATALANTA confirms the liberation of the Liberian-flagged Merchant Vessel BASILISK. The 17 crewmembers are safe, and the ship has been secured by one ATALANTA vessel, EUNAVFOR ATALANTA highlights.

Operation ATALANTA, the European Union's naval mission against piracy, has provided information regarding the piracy incident involving the Bangladesh-flagged bulk carrier MV Abdullah, which was seized in the Indian Ocean on 12th March.

The European Council prolonged the mandates of its Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operation in the Horn of Africa and Somalia.

The United Nations Security Council has not extended UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2608 (2021) which, among other measures, allowed for the fight against piracy and armed robbery of International Forces at sea within Somalia's territorial waters (TTW).

The Suez Canal blockade, not only unveiled the vulnerabilities posed by strategic straits and canals, but also sparked off a quick threat and risk assessment on EU NAVFOR ATALANTA side, the EU NAVFOR said. 

ECSA raised the alarm about the dire security situation in the Gulf of Guinea, at the ECR Conference on Maritime Security and the Blue Economy in the European Parliament on Wednesday, February 5.

Following the European Council's decision on 30 July to extent the mandate of EU NAVFOR Somalia Operation Atalanta until 31 December 2020, the European shipowners welcomed the move, noting that the operation has brought a significant decline in piracy numbers in the East African region. 

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has welcomed the extension of EUNAVFOR Operation Atalanta, following a decision by the EU Council, which will continue to see military forces deployed for counter piracy operations in the Western Indian Ocean until December 2018

A human disaster is currently happening in the Mediterranean Sea where more than 10,000 migrants have been picked up as they attempted to enter Europe from Libya
