The US Department of Justice announced that offshore oil platform operator agreed to more than $41 million in penalties for unauthorized oil discharges and improper operations in Gulf of Mexico. In the continuing joint enforcement action by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and in a separate BSEE administrative action, ATP Oil & Gas Corp.  ATP has agreed to resolve actions under the Clean Water Act (CWA) and the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA) concerning unauthorized discharges of oil and chemicals from a floating oil and gas production platform into the Gulf of Mexico, announced the Department of Justice, BSEE and EPA.  The two agreements impose a combined total of $41.85 million in judicial and administrative penalties for the violations. Trends in oil spills from tankers

ITOPF presented earlier this year at INTERSPILL conference a poster which depicts the trends in oil spills from tankers over the past ten years (2005-2014) ITOPF maintains a database of recorded oil spills from tankers, combined carriers and barges. This contains information on accidental spillages since 1970, except those resulting from acts of war.Information is gathered from a wide variety of sources, including published material, such as the shipping press and other specialist publications, vessel owners and their insurers, and from ITOPF's own activities on site at incidents.Whilst it is useful to observe the long term trends since 1970, it may also be beneficial to analyse more recent data for shorter term trends. ITOPF analysed the period 2005 to 2014, making comparisons between the first five year period 2005-2009 and the second five year period 2010-2014. ITOPF's poster presents the results of an analysis of various aspects of incident informati on for tanker spills seven tonnes and over within the past ten years (2005-2014). Factors used to identi fy trends include:• number of spills• quanti ty of oil spilled• types of oil spilled• operati ons of tankers and causes of spills• locati ons of spillsKey issues ● Notable trends can be seen when comparing ...

US, Alaska will not seek additional damages from Exxon for Valdez Spill

U.S. and Alaska state officials have officially announced they will no longer seek an additional $92 million from Exxon Mobil Corp. to pay for environmental cleanup and restoration stemming from the massive Exxon Valdez oil spill nearly three decades ago.The Department of Justice and the Alaska Department of Law announced that they are bringing to a close the federal and state judicial actions against ExxonMobil Corporation and its corporate predecessors regarding the 1989Exxon Valdez oil spill.  The Prince William Sound, Alaska, harlequin ducks and sea otters thought in 2006 to have been impacted by lingering subsurface oil have recovered to pre-spill population levels.  Scientists have concluded that exposure to the subsurface oil is no longer biologically significant to these species.  Accordingly, the governments have decided to withdraw their 2006 request to Exxon to fund bio-restoration of subsurface lingering oil patches. The March 1989 grounding of the tanker vessel Exxon Valdez on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound spilled nearly 11 million gallons of North Slope crude oil that ultimately contaminated some 1,500 miles of Alaska’s coastline.  It affected three national parks, four national wildlife refuges, a national forest, five state parks, four state critical habitat areas, a state game sanctuary and ...
