AET signs for eight newbuild tankers to max fuel efficiency

  AET Tankers has signed contracts in a deal valued at approximately USD 500 million to expand fleet with eight new vessels fitted with a range of latest eco-innovations to maximise fuel efficiency and their impact on the natural environment. Company said that this will enable them to be awarded the “green passport” notation. Newbuild vessels will also be fitted with IMO compliant ballast water management systems.Yesterday, AET contracted with Samsung Heavy Industries Co Ltd (SHI) for four Aframax vessels of 113,000 dwt to be delivered in 2018. A further contract was signed today with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd   (HHI) for two LR2 product vessels of 114,000 dwt and two Suezmax vessels of 158,000 dwt which will be delivered in 2017.The two LR2 product vessels are tied to long term time charters which AET has been awarded with a strategic oil major client. Thordon propeller ordered for new “Aloha Class” ships

Thordon Bearings has signed a landmark contract to supply COMPAC seawater-lubricated propeller shaft bearing solutions to two Jones Act containerships under construction at the Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. (APSI) for Matson Navigation Company, Inc.The order is significant in that it represents the first large containership reference for the manufacturer and the largest commercial ship propeller shafts to be fitted with COMPAC bearings.The 3600TEU ‘Aloha Class’ vessels, the largest Jones Act containerships ever built, will each feature a COMPAC bearing system for a 930mm diameter shaft driving an 8.1m diameter fixed pitch propeller.Matt Cox, President and CEO, Matson, said. CMA CGM vessels to be equipped with BIO-SEA BWTS

Matson Begins Production on New “Aloha Class” Ships for Hawaii

 Matson, Inc. has announced the start of production on two new “Aloha Class” containerships designed specifically for Hawaii service, with greater capacity and state-of-the-art “green ship technology” features. After a small ceremony at Aker Philadelphia Shipyard in Pennsylvania, the cutting of steel plates began, initiating the construction work to build both ships.In 2013, Matson subsidiary Matson Navigation Company, Inc. signed a contract with Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. (APSI) to build the two new ships for an aggregate price of $418 million. The new vessels are expected to be delivered in the third and fourth quarters of 2018. Matson also announced that the first of the two new ships will be named after the late Senator Daniel K. Inouye, who was a longstanding supporter of the U.S. maritime industry and its role in supporting Hawaii’s economy.The 850-foot long, 3,600 TEU vessels will be Matson’s largest ships and the largest Jones Act containerships ever constructed. Crowley takes delivery of first new Jones Act tanker

 Crowley Maritime Corp. took delivery of the Ohio, the first of four new, Jones Act, product tankers,  from Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI). The delivery is momentous not only for Crowley, but also for the industry because it signifies the first time a product tanker has been constructed with consideration for the future use of LNG for propulsion.
