Researchers discovered the last ship known to smuggle slaves from Africa to the US in Alabama’s Mobile River, nearly 160 years after it was deliberately sunk, the Alabama Historical Commission announced Wednesday. 

National Geographic Society announced the winners of the Marine Protection Prize. The Prize awards innovative solutions and technologies that protect and sustain fisheries in coastal communities. The winners are Paul Ferber of Marine Conservation Cambodia, Badr Idrissi of ATLAN Space and Melissa Garren of Pelagic Data Systems.

The video, produced by National Geographic, explores one of the biggest known threats to the ocean, which is no other than plastic pollution. It is estimated that about 8 million metric tons of plastic trash enters the sea from land every year, which is the equivalent of five plastic bags filled with trash for every foot of coastline in the world. 

The novel 3-D animation video, produced by motion graphic artist Andreas Tanner and published by National Geographic, provides an insight on all aspects of plastic production, consumption, and breakdown, diving into how our consumption of plastics has affected marine species deaths and increased human health risks.

The short film, published by National Geographic, illustrates dozens of plastic bottles on the seafloor, giving a picture of the magnitude of marine pollution. It is estimated that humans have produced about 6 billion metric tons of plastic waste up to 2015, only 9% of which was recycled. 

Based on vessel movement patterns, the Global Fishing Watch algorithm identified more than 70,000 commercial fishing vessels, the sizes and engine powers of these vessels, what type of fishing they engaged in, and when and where they fished down to the hour and kilometer.
