The video, produced by National Geographic, explores one of the biggest known threats to the ocean, which is no other than plastic pollution. It is estimated that about 8 million metric tons of plastic trash enters the sea from land every year, which is the equivalent of five plastic bags filled with trash for every foot of coastline in the world.
It is also estimated that humans have produced about 6 billion metric tons of plastic waste up to 2015, only 9% of which was recycled, while 12 billion tons of plastic are expected to end up on landfills or enter the marine environment by 2050.
UN says that plastic debris results in an estimated $13 billion a year in losses from damage to marine ecosystems, including financial losses to fisheries and tourism as well as time spent cleaning beaches.
