Finnlines orders Wartsila systems to reduce emissions

Finnlines has ordered Wärtsilä Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems for six of its Baltic and North Sea fleet of vessels, due to new stringent sulphur oxide (SOx) emission regulations that will be enforced from January 2015. By selecting Wärtsilä scrubber systems, the vessels will be able to operate in compliance with the new environmental regulations while continuing to operate on heavy fuel oil. The Wärtsilä systems will also operate in compliance with the water discharge criteria set by regulators. The Finnlines order, received in May 2014, calls for one Wärtsilä scrubber system for each of the six vessels, with the two main engines on each vessel being connected to a single integrated scrubber system. Both concept design and basic design engineering services are included as needed for plan approval by Class and Flag notations. The Wärtsilä equipment will be delivered during November and December of this year. Furthermore, Wärtsilä will support Finnlines during the installation phase by providing technical advice. "Environmental compliance and cost efficient operations are key factors in the success of Finnlines. The installation of Wärtsilä scrubber systems on our recent series of six modern Ro-Ro vessels is a major step in the implementation of our strategy. The extensive ...

DNV GL propose hybrid power systems for offshore units

DNV GL is proposing a new hybrid power concept for offshore units using batteries in combination with traditional power generation equipment. The concept has already delivered multiple advantages in the maritime and automotive industries, but has not yet been applied in the O&G industry. "We are inviting the oil & gas sector to jointly develop a solution for incorporating hybrid power systems in the offshore industry. This will reduce costs, fuel consumption and emissions" says Christian Markussen, subsea business development director at DNV GL Oil & Gas. Oil and gas operators are under constant pressure to reduce both cost and emissions - two requirements that are conflicting. An important means of achieving these reductions is by improving energy efficiency, which DNV GL suggests can be done by using a hybrid system. DNV GL is launching a Joint Industry Project which aims to capture the lessons learnt from the maritime industry, evaluate the business case and provide practical guidelines for implementation. The concept that DNV GL is proposing is similar to that used in the automotive industry. The maritime industry started to adopt this technology five years ago not just because of the environmental benefits, but also because it adds financial ...

DNV GL wins Environment Protection Award

DNV GL won the "Environment Protection Award" at the 2014 Seatrade Asia Awards held on 7 April. "We are honored to have received this award, which reflects the industry's recognition of DNV GL's environmental best practices," said Steen Lund, Regional Manager for DNV GL Maritime South East Asia & Pacific. Its new office in Singapore is also a fine example of combing intelligent building structures and energy efficiency consumption by setting green initiatives such as implementing motion-based sensor lightings, controlled central air conditioning, central recycling waste collection areas and other intelligent initiatives that go to make the DNV GL office one of the most energy efficient buildings in Singapore. Steen Lund added, "As we move forward, we aim to continue our commitment towards fulfilling our purpose of safeguarding life, property and the environment.  We will continue to bring innovations forward to help our customers become more energy efficient." The Seatrade Asia Awards is an annual gathering of leading industry executives and a platform to recognize companies who excelled in their respective fields in the maritime industry.  The Environment Protection Award was given to the organization, which had taken significant steps to reduce its environmental footprint, invest in green technology and ...

KR release mobile app with IMO conventions

Korean Register (KR), an IACS member classification society, has released the world's first mobile app containing all up-to-date IMO conventions. This brand new facility is based on KR's KR-CON software which is an international database program containing the full up-to-date texts of all IMO Conventions, Codes, Resolutions and Circulars. It enables users to identify regulations relevant to a specific task and helps ensure all IMO requirements are applied correctly. KR-CON is currently being used by surveyors, port state control inspectors, shipping companies, shipyards and design houses in more than 30 countries across the world. The app version of KR-CON was developed to meet an increasing demand from users wanting to access information whilst on the move. KR-CON is now in its 12th iteration and migrating the system to an app environment was the next logical step in its evolution. On its launch, Dr. Chon Young-kee, Chairman & CEO of KR said: "The mobile version of KR-CON facilitates easy and on-the-go access to our database which enhances its user-friendliness and satisfies the wishes of our current users. This new version includes photos, diagrams and videos related to the IMO conventions and codes. These will illustrate what used to be a text ...

Retrofitting cruise ships to LNG by elongation

DNV GL has recenlty issued a new report to evaluate the possibility of retrofitting existing cruise ships to run on LNG as fuel. Considering the cost of investments and fuel prices, LNG may, in the author's view, be a cost- beneficial solution that meets the challenge for reducing air emissions. The report is written by Alexandros Chiotopoulos (Consultant), Gerd-Michael Würsig (Segment Director), Atle Ellefsen (Chief Naval Architect), Helge Hermundsgård (District Manager). A large number of cruise ships currently sailing to popular destinations will soon need to comply with stricter environmental regulations - requiring the installation of scrubbers, the use of LNG as fuel, or a changeover from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to marine gas oil (MGO) or a combination of these two. Compliance with regulations and the strongly fluctuating fuel prices have made cruise operators sceptical about the success of their future business. The difference in price between MGO and the HFO currently used can increase operational expenses by up to 40%. Making ships more energy efficient and using distillate fuels in order to comply with the forthcoming regulations is an option, but the financial attractiveness needs to be investigated for every ship on a case-by-case basis. A conversion to LNG might, under certain ...
