IMO's 69 section of Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) is in progress. The basic features of a global CO2 data collection system have been agreed upon and further work on CO2 reduction commitments from shipping has been outlined.

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved mandatory requirements for ships to record and report their fuel consumption, in a move that sends a clear and positive signal about the Organization’s continuing commitment to climate change mitigation.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has welcomed progress made by the IMO Marine Environment Committee (MEPC) this week (18-22 April) towards the adoption of a global CO2 data collection system. Once the amendment to the MARPOL Convention enters in force, all ships over 5,000 GT will be required to provide information on CO2 emissions via their flag states.

Indonesia’s President Mr Joko Widodo addressed IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee in London at the invitation of IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim. The visit was part of Mr Lim’s initiative to raise awareness of the Organization within the broader audience of global leadership.

These address further measures to reduce the sector’s CO2 emissions, outstanding problems with the implementation of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention, and the need for an immediate IMO decision on whether or not ships will have to use 0.5% sulphur fuel in 2020.

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative has called on IMO to show its true intent to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions from shipping at the forthcoming MEPC 69, which begins on 18th April 2016.
