New Opportunities for LNG in Shipping

EU funding available to fight pollution caused by ships The European Commission recently proposed two separate initiatives, which include funding possibilities intended to help finance projects combating pollution caused by ships. Though not explicitly mentioning liquefied natural gas (LNG), both initiatives are perfectly designed for LNG-related projects to benefit from the provided financial aids. Commission proposes renewed resources to counter pollution at seaIn early April the Commission announced renewed funding in the amount of 160.5 million to combat pollution caused by ships. The funds have will be made available for the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) over a seven year period, in that way enabling the agency to maintain its network of specialised anti-pollution vessels and to further develop satellite images in order to detect, contain and recover pollutants emitted by ships on European waterways. The EMSA Stand-by Oil Spill Response Vessels are commercial vessels which can be rapidly converted to oil pollution response activities. The contracted vessels have large recovered oil storage capacities and a choice of oil recovery systems. In parallel, the funds will support the efficient system of satellite imaging that has been developed to detect pollution in good time (CleanSeaNet)and which underpins efforts by the Member States ...

Hyundai Heavy Develops its own FLNG Model

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has emerged as an increasingly important clean energy source Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has emerged as an increasingly important clean energy source, particularly following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan and triggered one of the world's worst nuclear disasters. With the increasing demand for LNG, it has become more attractive to oil and gas majors to develop "stranded gas" in offshore fields. With this in mind, Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries, working with German industrial gas and engineering firm Linde AG, has completed developing its own Hyundai FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Plant) concept. The FLNG concept is a special floating vessel that can produce natural gas, liquefy it, and offload it directly to an LNG carrier. HHI conducted risk and safety evaluations of the FLNG and received approval-in-principle from classification society DNV. HHI says the Hyundai FLNG takes 25% less time to build compared to the onshore liquefaction and storage plant, making it an attractive option for oil majors and global shipping companies looking to commercialize stranded gas in offshore fields. The Hyundai FLNG has an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons of LNG and can store about 193,800 m3 LNG with its compact size of ...
