BV wins Canadian gas fuel contracts

Bureau Veritas is to class two innovative projects for gas-fuelled vessels to be built for Canadian owners in Turkish shipyards. British Columbia-based Seaspan Ferries has chosen BV class for two hybrid LNG/diesel/battery-powered ro-ro cargo ferries which will be built at the Sedef yard in Turkey. Quebec-based Transport Desgagnes, meanwhile, has chosen BV class for two 14,000 dwt gas-fuelled asphalt/product tankers to be built at Besiktas. Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive Vice-President and Managing Director of the Marine & Offshore Division, Bureau Veritas, says, “BV really knows LNG. We have extensive experience of handling LNG and using LNG as a fuel with our gas carrier fleet. Our ability to deploy that expertise for the benefit of shipyards and owners who are both breaking new ground was crucial to these owners entrusting BV with the classification of these vessels.” The 148.9 m Seaspan ferries are due for delivery in 2016 and will operate on Canada’s west coast, carrying up to 59 trailers at speeds of up to 16 knots propelled by azimuthing drives. Twin dual-fuel W9L 34DF generators will be able to burn LNG from one single 200 cbm Type C tank below the main deck and there will be a hybrid battery pack ...

Wartsila dual-fuel engines to power icebreaking LNG carriers

Five new Arc 7 design ice-class LNG carriers being built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) yard in South Korea will be powered by a total of 30 Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines. The vessels will operate in arctic conditions to serve the Yamal LNG project in Northern Russia. The order was placed in January with Wärtsilä’s joint venture company, Wärtsilä Hyundai Engine Co. (WHEC) who will also build the engines in South Korea. Each of the LNG carriers will be fitted with four 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF engines and two 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF engines. The engines will primarily utilise liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel, but are also capable of running on conventional marine diesel fuels. When operating in arctic conditions, the vessels will be required to handle ambient temperatures of as much as minus 50 degrees Celsius, and to break through ice up to two metres thick. This requires dramatic variations in engine load within a short time span, and the Wärtsilä engines were considered as being the most suitable for these extremely challenging conditions. “Altogether, Wärtsilä has been contracted within the past twelve months to supply 90 dual-fuel engines to fifteen of these Arc 7 ice-class LNG ...

Sovcomflot and RS cooperate to bring new vessels to Russia’s fleet

Sovcomflot (SCF Group) and Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) have both taken steps to make the Russian fleet more competitive. In 2014, 10 SCF Group vessels were transferred to the RS class, meaning that it is now responsible for the survey of 40 Sovcomflot ships in total. These include the very latest Atlanticmax LNG carriers, multi-purpose icebreaking supply vessels, crude oil tankers, chemical carriers and tugs. In order to satisfy the increasing requirements of large-scale oil & gas projects on Russia’s continental shelf, Sovcomflot plans to expand its fleet of specialised and technically advanced vessels operating under the flag of the Russian Federation, whilst continuing to develop mutually-beneficial partnerships with Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. At present, SCF’s entire shipbuilding programme is being carried out with the participation of RS. SCF Group and RS are currently working together on several shipbuilding projects which are technically complex, in light of the difficulty of operating vessels at extremely low temperatures and in regions with challenging climatic conditions. The new vessels ordered by Sovcomflot to serve Russia’s Yamal LNG project include an ARC7 pilot Arctic ice class LNG carrier. The ship’s technical characteristics and her unique power capacity, comparable with that of ...

Company switches DFDE to MEGI propulsion

The Norwegian company FLEX LNG announced that they have reached an agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries to convert  the propulsion system for two LNG carriers from DFDE to the fuel efficient 2-stroke slow speed MEGI main engines.  The consequence of the change is an increase in the yard price of the vessels taking into account the change in specification, including the deployment of the new engine system and exhaust gas treatment for compliance with new emissions regulations, 0.09% Boil-off Rate to maintain speed flexibility, and ballast water treatment system. The price increase is to be paid by FLEX on delivery. The expected delivery dates of the vessels have been postponed from Q1 2017 to Q1 and Q2 2018. With the support of major shareholders and Samsung Heavy Industries, FLEX is laying the foundation for building an attractive position in the LNG shipping market with the newest generation of LNG carriers. For a typical long haul trade the new and more efficient twin screw LNGC design with MEGI engines will have average daily fuel consumption (gas and fuel oil) of approximately 25% less than the DFDE LNG carrier design recently delivered into the market. This corresponds to a saving of more ...
