ITSAS GAS, owned by the Basque Energy Agency, Ibaizabal Remolcadores and Naviera Murueta, conducted the first pilot test of ship to ship LNG cargo operation in the port of Bilbao. This is the first time that this kind of operation has been carried out in the Atlantic Arc and the Mediterranean.

Port of Gothenburg informed that a construction of an LNG facility is under way at the Port. The facility will create new opportunities for LNG-fueled ships that call at the Gothenburg Energy Port. It will start operations during 2018. LNG will arrive by trailer or in containers, and will be distributed via a 450-metre vacuum-insulated cryogenic pipeline to the quayside.

The location that was selected is the “America Harbour”, and was chosen to enable the transfer of LNG in various ways. Namely, both trucks and LNG transport vessels can discharge LNG into the FlexFueler making it independent from supply of large-scale terminals to load LNG.

K Line, Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., Toyota Tsusho Corporation and NYK Line announced they have begun joint discussions on the commercialization of a new business to supply LNG as a marine fuel to ships in the Chubu, the central region of Japan.

As part of Inland Waterways Authority of India's efforts to promote environment friendly mode of transport, LNG bunkering facility will also be included at the Ghazipur terminal, as LNG fuelled vessels are expected to sail on NW1. The first phase of the terminal construction will have been completed by April 2020.

The Northern Adriatic Sea Port Authority in collaboration with the towing company Rimorchiatori Riuniti Panfido conducted a study regarding the design of an innovative LNG barge, for the distribution of LNG to ship, starting from the Venice LNG terminal.

To start the supply to Barcelona, according to the contract, a ship will be assigned to conduct LNG bunkering in the Port of Barcelona. In the case of Valencia and Algeciras, both companies are already working on a land-based solution. The first ship is scheduled to start operations at the beginning of 2018

The Port of Naples is one of the largest Italian seaports and one of the largest seaports in the Mediterranean Sea basin. Α pre-feasibility study, in collaboration with the University of Campania, has been completed for the launch of construction of an LNG bunkering facility in the port of Naples.

The two companies created a portfolio of cargo and passenger vessels, aiming to save cargo space compared to classic cylindrical-type LNG tank solutions and to enable the use of LNG for long ocean voyages. The portfolio includes a container vessel, a pure car and truck carrier and a cruise ship.

Although it could be argued that there remain more unanswered questions than definite answers arounf the 2020 global sulphur cap, the momentum behind LNG as a viable, sustainable marine fuel is undeniable, argued Stephen Cadden, COO, and Steve Esau, General Manager of SEA\LNG coalition.
