Last week, SAFETY4SEA remembered the Torrey Canyon oil spill, which claimed the title of the worst environmental tanker disaster in March 1967. The sinking of the Amoco Cadiz more than a decade later came to claim again the title of the world’s worst oil spill, putting another dark spot in the environmental record of shipping.
More than 50 years after the supertanker ‘Torrey Canyon’ ran aground off England, spurring every drop of its crude oil cargo into the Atlantic, SAFETY4SEA attempts to analyze the world’s first major oil tanker disaster that put the meaning of environmental conservation in a new context.
Oil spill incidents seem to occur more nowadays. Thinking of major oil spills, there were three major ones that took place in the US, starting from Santa Barbara in 1969, Exxon Valden in 1989 and Deepwater Horizon in 2010.
The 13rd of November marks 16 years after the Greek-owned and Bahamas-operated tanker ‘Prestige’ encountered heavy weather during a routine voyage and eventually sank off the coast of Spain, causing the worst environmental disaster in the country and one of the greatest oil spills in Europe.
As part of its Remember Naka-no-Se Campaign, NYK conducted a crisis-response drill based on the scenario of a serious accident occurring on an NYK-owned LNG carrier. The campaign is conducted every year, drawing on the lessons learned from the crude oil tanker ‘Diamond Grace’ oil spill.
