In light of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the Italian-based company, Fincantieri announced that suspends its operations for at least 14 days, to avoid the spread of the disease in its shipyards.

Yilport Holding officially took over the Italian Port of Taranto's container terminal on a 49-year concession agreement with Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea (PNAIS). Yilport Holding took over the terminal on February 27, aiming to bring the terminal's annual capacity up to 3 million TEUs.

The Italian refiner Saras launched its very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) in early September, with its sails now having topped 120,000 tonnes, following the implementation of IMO's 2020 sulphur cap regulation. The Italian refiner is targeting 550,000 tonnes of VLSFO and 180,000 tonnes of marine gasoil (MGO) in annual sales, as Reuters reports.

On 24 January, the shipbuilding company Fincantieri shake hands with Barzan Holding and inked an MoU in order to boost their strategic partnership. In fact, both sides through evaluation and studies of new technologies and capabilities, aim to lead to a future acquisition of new vessels in the defense field.

The Supreme Court of Cassation in Italy confirmed that the German captain of a migrant-rescue ship, should never have been arrested. Specifically, the Master of "MV Sea Watch 3", Carola Rackete, was arrested on 29 June 2019 by Italian authorities for helping and abetting illegal immigration and for forcing her way into the port of Lampedusa.

Lightering operations are now taking place for the stranded freighter CDRY Blue, after it ran aground on a rocky shore in Sant'Antioco, Sardinia on December 21. Smit Salvage is the lead salvor, and it is overseeing the work in collaboration with the Italian Coast Guard and the local port authority.
