The IMO invited ISO to develop a standard for methyl/ethyl alcohol as a marine fuel and a standard for methyl/ethyl alcohol fuel couplings. ISO will work on these standards and provide them as soon as possible, but noted that there was limited experience with such fuels in practice. Currently there are eight large ships which operate on methanol.

IMO’s FAL Committee approved a revised structure for its Compendium on Facilitation and Electronic Business, including a new standard IMO reference data set, which will be used as basis for automated and digital systems for exchange of information when ships arrive at and depart from ports.

In its latest Safety Flashes, IMCA presents a case of a fire due to incorrectly selected oxygen welding gas hose, during a routine cutting job onboard a ship. There were no injuries or ship damage, but investigation later revealed that the hose had been recently replaced with one that did not comply with ISO 14113 specification.

The classification society, Indian Register of Shipping informed that it has secured ISO/IEC 27001 certification for its Information Security Management System from the British Standards Institution. The ISO 27001 standard requires the management to examine its organisation’s information security risks, vulnerabilities and impacts, implement a set of information security controls to address risks that is considered unacceptable.

We hear that ISO 27001 is a non-technical systems focused standard. This may confuse most of us and create queries on how this standard may help organizations, including the maritime ones, achieve the EU GDPR.

A proposal by China to mandate specific ISO test methods for sulphur, after a proposal made by IBIA to the IMO, has won support to be further considered as the IMO consider measures to ensure uniform implementation of the 0.5% sulphur limit. China submitted that the methods should be ISO 8754:2003 or ISO 14596:2007.
