The transition to IMO 2020 compliant fuel oil (0.5% sulphur) has not been without problems, with sulphur content, sediment, and aluminium plus silicon being the main issues experienced, a recent survey found. 

INTERTANKO, representing independent tanker owners of the world, issued guidance on how to manage crew welfare amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The guidance includes advice on helping seafarers to deal with emotional stress and overcome negative feelings.

A new situation has emerged with the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting to uncertainty on trade among others. In this context, INTERTANKO issued a guide to address charterparties on any questions that may arise.  

Following the IMO 2020 regulation concerning the global sulphur limit for marine fuel, BIMCO, ICS, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO had launched a survey on fuel oil quality and safety back in February. In remind to this, the four organisations call all vessel managers, as well as technical superintendents to share their insight.

INTERTANKO issued an Outbreak Management Plan, outlining plans and procedures to be put in place to prepare a ship for shore personnel to come onboard and to protect seafarers from COVID-19.

For this reason, BIMCO, ICS, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO are calling on fleet- and vessel managers, as well as technical superintendents, to share their insight and experiences with the new IMO 2020 compliant fuels.

Recently, shipping stakeholders submitted a paper to the IMO proposing the addition of a new output under the work program on Fair treatment of seafarers detained on suspicion of committing maritime crimes. The paper highlights that in some cases the master and the crew may not be aware of their vessel being involved in smuggling activities

Shipowner associations representing the global maritime transport industry submitted a proposal to the IMO to form the world’s first collaborative shipping R&D programme for pushing work of CO2 emissions reduction from international shipping.
