Responding to the high demand for the ground-breaking Fleet Xpress service, Inmarsat announced its plans to enhance installation support network by boosting from six to 33 the number of ports where the service installation with a flat fee is now available. Inmarsat’s service which won the 2017 SMART4SEA Excellent Award last January, will now be available at 12 Asia Pacific ports, 11 in the Europe Middle-East and Africa region, and 10 ports in the Americas.

MarineFields and Inmarsat have signed a MoU, to partner in investigating how sea traffic management and satellite connectivity can make port calls more efficient for all stakeholders. The joint effort will be focused on providing port call optimization services resulting in just-in-time operations and shortened turn-around times.

Inmarsat said that it is a founding member of a new joint working group formed by the International Association of Classification Societies, to develop a coordinated position on cybercrime and its prevention. The company notes that stakeholders unity was critical in meeting the unpredictability of the cyber security threat to shipping.

Inmarsat has made available five Fleet One units to a pilot initiative, that aims to bring change to the way ships connecting island communities in the Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu communicate. The IMO- endorsed-capacity-building pilot programme is the result of co-operation between IMSO and the Government of Vanuatu.

Inmarsat confirmed the successful launch of the fourth, high-speed broadband communications satellite in its transformational Global Xpress constellation. Inmarsat-5 F4 joins the three GX satellites already in orbit, which have, since December 2015, been delivering services to users on land, at sea and in the air.

Inmarsat announced that ‘Fleet Xpress’, which won the 2017 SMART4SEA Excellent Award last January, had an unprecedented market response at the first time of its launch covering in excess of 10,000 ships. This has been reached as a result of contracts with individual ship owners, commitments from strategic Partners, and transitioning agreements with existing Inmarsat customers.

An IMO Sub Committee decided to greenlight consideration of both Inmarsat's FleetBroadband and Fleet One for formal approval. To date, Inmarsat is the only company which has received approval from the International Maritime Organization to provide the GMDSS data and messaging communications on which mariners rely in the last resort.

Hapag-Lloyd has signed a five-year contract with Inmarsat aiming at the transition of all existing ships that it manages in-house from Inmarsat FleetBroadband services to Fleet Xpress. The agreement also covers five 10,500 TEU vessels as latest new builds.

Inmarsat announced that its maritime connectivity service Fleet Xpress, has been selected by Hong Kong-based Fleet Management Limited (FML), large independent third-party ship manager. The service enhances vessel efficiency, crew welfare and safety, and facilitates ‘connected ship’ applications.
