The European Council adopted conclusions on inland waterway transport, on December 3. The conclusions acknowledge the significant contribution that this mode of transport can make towards mitigating the negative effects of the transport sector as a whole.

A new Unmanned Surface Vessel or inland waterways surveying has presented its ability to follow programmed survey missions. Micro Rapid Environmental Assessment Vessel (mREAV) is also able to provide live survey data, in order to create precise bathymetries in shallow-water or dangerous environments.

Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, announced he is set to receive India’s first container cargo being transported on inland waterways. The newly constructed Multi-Modal Terminal is the first of the three Multi-Modal Terminals and two Inter-Modal Terminals being constructed on River Ganga at Varanasi, as part of the government's aspiration to stretch the transportation of Ganga between Varanasi to Haldi.

Under the Great Lakes Pilotage Act of 1960, USCG has proposed new base pilotage rates and surcharges for the 2019 shipping season. This rule would adjust the pilotage rates to account for anticipated traffic, an increase in the number of pilots, anticipated inflation, and surcharges for applicant pilots.

On Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 September 2018 more than 45 participants from Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, Russia, Bulgaria met in Saint Petersbourg, Russia, to discuss “automation in European Inland Waterways”.

The Inland Waterways Authority of India issued 13 standardised ship designs suitable for large barge haulage on river Ganga. This aims to serve as an enabler for domestic shipbuilding industry working on inland vessels and open possibilities for cargo and passenger movement on National Waterway-1.

Governor Nathan Deal, state officials and more than 350 business and civic leaders officially opened the Appalachian Regional Port in Northwest Georgia. Located in Murray County, the new facility will provide logistics solutions in a four-state region and remove an estimated 50,000 trucks and 15 million truck miles. 

In a bid to improve domestic maritime competitiveness, India announced plans to relax its cabotage law, which has been a matter of discussion for many years. Under the present Merchant Shipping Act 1958, only Indian-flagged vessels or foreign-flagged vessels as licensed by DGS, can ply the coasting trade of India.

If the drought that Germany experiences continues, the inland shipping in the country is possible to come to a partial standstill. Namely, on the river Rhine, ships are only able to carry half or even less cargo as usual. Currently, about 80% of all goods transported by inland navigation vessels are transported via the Rhine.

To keep US waterways open and safe, the US Coast Guard encourages shippers, whether professional mariners or recreational boaters, to self-report hazards to navigation, such as discrepant buoys and beacons, or debris, when sailing in inland waterways.
