During GL Energy Efficiency Forum in Madrid The coming introduction of the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) regulations was very much on the minds of the speakers and participants of Germanischer Lloyd's (GL) "Energy Efficiency for Existing Vessels" forum in Madrid. The SEEMP is one of a number of regulations and guidelines which will see the maritime industry squarely confront their impact on the environment and the measures they must take to reduce it.Among the almost fifty attendees, who took part in the forum on the 30th of May, were representatives from ship owners associations, engineering companies, the Spanish administration, and the Spanish navy. Also in attendance was the President of the Spanish Maritime cluster, Mr. Federico Esteve.Participants and speakers were welcomed by Mr. Manuel Carlier, Managing Director of ANAVE, the Spanish ship owners association. He noted the timely nature of the forum, given rising fuel prices, new regulations, and the potential future impact of SEEMP. Held from 11 to 20 May 2010 The Maritime Safety Committee held its 89th session at the IMO Headquater, London, from 11 to 20 May 2010, under the chairmanship of Mr Neil Ferrer (Philippines).The session was attended by representatives from 108 Member States and 2 Associate Members. It was also attended by observers from 4 UN specialised agencies, 7 Inter-Governmental Organizations and 38 Non-Governmental Organizations with consultative status.It was the last session chaired by Mr Ferrer. Continuing efforts to seek new ways of reducing carbon footprint Hanjin Shipping announced that its Supply Chain Carbon Calculator, developed and introduced to the public back in December, 2009, has been upgraded recently.According to Hanjin Shipping, the former system was able to calculate only the amount of CO2 emissions from one location to another while the upgraded version can provide information by period, multiple destinations and Bill of Lading number.Hanjin Shipping comments, "We have noticed that our customers are becoming more and more conscious of their carbon footprint in line with the industry-wide efforts to reduce CO2 emissions."The company added, "We are delighted to be able to provide our customers with transparent CO2 emissions data. This unique device will certainly benefit our customers as well as the shipping industry. The meeting went on to establish the mission and objectives of the regional training centre A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to allow the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to fund the building of a regional training centre in Djibouti, to promote the implementation of the Code of Conduct concerning the Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden (Djibouti Code of Conduct), was signed on Monday (30 May 2011), in Djibouti.The MOU was signed by His Excellency Mr Mohamed Moussa Ibrahim Balala, Minister of Equipment and Transport, Republic of Djibouti, and Mr Koji Sekimizu, Director, Maritime Safety Division, IMO, at the opening ceremony of a high-level meeting, held to formulate a regional coordination process for maritime security training and to endorse the regional training centre.After the signing ceremony, the meeting went on to adopt a resolution to establish the mission and objectives of the regional training centre in Djibouti; the coordination process for regional maritime training; and the process for the programming of regional training.The training centre will be built using funds donated by Japan to the IMO Trust Fund for the implementation of the Djibouti Code of Conduct, which has ...
