ECSA contradicts European port’s policy on GHG emissions

ECSA regrets that European port and cargo interests have come out in favour of the European Parliament’s position to conditionally include shipping in the EU ETS as of 2023, if the IMO does not have a comparable system operating by 2021. European port and freight forwarder associations did confirm that a global agreement is their preferred option to curb greenhouse gas emissions of ships.

IMO supports sustainable use of the oceans

IMO announced that preparations are underway in New York ahead of June’s UN Oceans Conference, which is focused on achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: ‘Life Below Water’. As an estimated 40% of the world’s oceans are being badly affected by unsustainable practices, Goal 14 aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

IMO SDC Sub-Committee: What's on the agenda?

The Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) meets for its fourth session from 13 through 17 February. Key topics on the agenda include the expected finalization of draft explanatory notes to the SOLAS chapter II-1 subdivision and damage stability regulations and the completion of draft interim guidelines for use of fibre reinforced plastic elements within ship structures.
