IMO announced that a new centre, tasked with promoting technologies to navigate shipping into a low-carbon future, has been launched at the University of Trinidad and Tobago, on March 8. The centre will cater to the needs of the Caribbean region under the Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre Network, a project funded by EU and run by IMO.

The Sub-Committee finalized Ship Design and Construction (SDC), 4th session through 13-17 February 2017 and issued draft Revised Explanatory Notes to the SOLAS chapter II-1 subdivision and damage stability regulations, aiming to provide detailed guidance on the application of individual SOLAS chapter II-1 regulations.

The review and modernization of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety system (GMDSS) continues this week at the fourth session of the Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communication, Search and Rescue (6-10 March).

IMO continues to work on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, this time with a train-the-trainer course on energy-efficient ship operation, realized in Mumbai, on 28 February – 3 March, under GloMEEP project. The course trained maritime officials to the complex technical and regulatory aspects designed to make shipping greener.

Korean Register has opened a new ICT (information communications technology) Center to enhance the application of advanced information and ICT across the maritime and ship classification industries. The ICT Center will focus on finding ways to apply big data to identify safe navigation in real time, to understand accident statistics and manage risk better.

IMO recently announced that practical training on board ships for port State control officers, supported by class-based lectures, has boosted knowledge amongst participants from eight countries during a training course in Muscat and Sohar, Oman.

ECSA announced that the European shipping industry welcomes the European Commission’s mid-term review of the EU Maritime Transport Strategy 2009-2018. The industry endorses the emphasis on better regulation and strategy goals, promoting Europe as a globally leading, high-quality region for shipping to do business in.

Dr. Edmund Hughes, Head of Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency, Marine Environment Division of International Maritime Organization (IMO), talks about IMO’s efforts to combat GHG emissions from shipping, highlighting that industry needs to continue to support the Organization in formulating global regulations towards a more sustainable future.

Secure and efficient ports support a sustainable maritime sector and underline the interconnection between ships, ports and people. This was one of the themes outlined by IMO's Javier Yasnikouski, Head of Maritime Security, who was speaking at the Hemispheric Conference on Port Competitiveness and Security.

IMO announced that the Government of Bangladesh is actively seeking international partnerships and financial support to help make the country’s ship-recycling facilities greener and more sustainable, following the successful completion of the first phase of a project aimed at improving safety and environmental standards within the country’s ship-recycling industry.
