IMO published the summary of the Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers, 6th session (CCC 6), which took place from 9 to 13 September 2019. The Sub-Committee validated a new IMO Model Course on Safe Handling and Transport of Solid Bulk Cargoes.

Japanese firms Osaka Gas and Daihatsu Diesel received an Approval in Principle from ClassNK for their joint project on an LPG Reformer for marine engines. This was the first AIP granted in Japan for such equipment. The LPG Reformer is designed to convert LPG into synthetic methane gas equivalent to the kind found in LNG.

Experts from the Greek shipping market gathered in Athens, Greece, in late May, for the third in a series of global seminars designed to educate the industry on the potential of methanol as a marine fuel. The seminar was organised by consultancy Sea Commerce and supported by the Methanol Institute.

MPA Singapore issued a circular concerning training and certification requirements for seafarers on ships, subject to the International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-Flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code). The circular applies to shipowners, ship managers, masters, chief engineer officers, marine engineer officers, deck officers and ratings of Singapore registered ships subject to the IGF code.

Three new model courses and one revised model course have been put forward for validation to the Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping on 29 April-3 May. IMO model courses assist Member States to develop detailed training programmes, under STCW Convention.

Class NK accredited in late March a training program for seafarers responsible for LNG and other low-flashpoint fuels on board NYK Group-operated ships, making the NYK the first Japanese shipping company to obtain an international institution’s certification in the field of IGF Code training.

IMO's Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC5), held on 10-14 September 2018, addressed safety issues related to dangerous cargo. Among the highlights was that it agreed amendments to IGF and IMSBC Code, as well as draft interim guidelines for the safety of ships powered by methanol. 

South Korean Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has delivered to compatriot Ilshin Logistics the world’s first LNG-fueled bulk carrier under the dual-class of Lloyd’s Register and Korean Register. The 50,000 dwt bulk carrier has been verified to be in compliance with the IGF Code.

This marks MOL's first ownership of a tugboat powered by LNG-fueled engines produced by Yanmar Co., Ltd. and it will be the first LNG-fueled tugboat in Japan conforming to the IGF code. It is also Japan's first LNG-fueled tugboat with the LNG fuel tank mounted on the exposed deck at the stern of the ship.

Kongsberg Digital has received DNV-GL statements of compliance for two Engine Room Simulator models, designed to provide training on the K-Sim Engine simulator platform. The certification, based on the requirements of STCW Convention, Regulation I/12, was awarded to the DEDF Cruise Ferry and L11 MAN 6S70 ME SCC K-Sim Engine models in December 2017.
