ISWAN, in partnership with InterManager, ICS, ICMA and ITF, issued a new booklet, entitled 'Arrested and Detained Vessels, and Abandoned Seafarers', providing guidance to welfare organisations dealing with incidents of seafarers being abandoned and vessels being arrested or detained.

Speaking in Istanbul, Simon Bennett, Deputy Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) warned that preventing overcapacity and unsustainably low freight rates continues to be a major challenge ten years after the massive downturn of 2008. Mr. Bennett noted that shipping companies should show restraint when ordering new ships, in order to prevent stifling recovery.

Refugees and migrants have reportedly hijacked the Palau-flagged tanker 'Elhiblu 1', after the ship rescued them off the coast of Libya, Tuesday night. The Maltese navy took over control shortly after and the ship arrived in Malta Thursday morning. 

ICS published the latest update of its Flag State Performance Table. In the report, ICS analyzes how the administrations performed, by providing an annual overview of the world’s ship registers against a number of criteria. The Flag State Performance Table presents the performance of individual flag states worldwide, and analyses the administrations' performance based on a number of criteria.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), that represents the world’s national shipowners’ associations and 80% of the world merchant fleet, addressed its concerns about the Canadian proposed legislation which it says will interfere with international maritime trade.

As the 2020 deadline for the sulphur cap gets nearer, ICS reviewed progress in persuading the IMO to take measures to address expected implementation problems. This includes safety and fuel compatibility issues regarding the use of new 0.5% sulphur blends and continuing uncertainty over the availability of compliant fuels in every port globally.  

Four trade associations of the international liner shipping industry submitted comments to the European Commission supporting the extension of the EU consortia block exemption regulation for five years more beyond its current 2020 expiration date. 

The International Transport Workers Federation and the International Chamber of Shipping, convened in Geneva at the Joint Maritime Commission Subcommittee on Seafarers Wages. The two organizations decided to update the minimum wage for an able seafarer by 27 USD over the next 3 years.

ISWAN, ICS and InterManager launched a new guidance for shipping companies and manning agents, on dealing with situations involving missing seafarers. The guidance covers managing relationships onboard, actions that should be taken, and managing relationships with the families of seafarers who have gone missing.

Speaking in Tokyo, the Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping, Esben Poulsson, gave emphasis on serious concerns regarding the challenge that the US presented 'to the proven benefits of multilateralism and the existing global trading order' .
