The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA) and the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) inked a cooperation agreement for the design of the next generation of icebreakers. It is reported that the design of the icebreakers will be conducted as a joint project. However, the partners have only discussed about the design of the icebreakers and not about the possible construction of the icebreakers.

After having set historical record in winter ice, the Russian icebreaker «Kapitan Dranitsyn» requested assistance to return to Russia as it made its way to the North Pole to support the MOSAiC expedition. The 129 meter-long icebreaker left Norway on 3 February.

Wallenius Marine in order to complete the design of the world's largest LNG RoRo vessel with ice class 1A Super, conducted some ice testing operations using a seven meter long ship model, in Helsinki. 

The 159 crew members onboard US Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star departed McMurdo Station in Antarctica, Wednesday, after escorting three refuel and resupply vessels and assisting with a five-day inspection of foreign research stations, installations and equipment in Antarctica.

Russian Smart LNG, a joint venture of Sovcomflot and Novatek, has locked a lease from VEB.RF to provide finance for four icebreaking LNG carriers for the Arctic LNG 2 project. Smart LNG also inked long-term charter agreements for these tankers with Arctic LNG 2, as Sovcomflot revealed in a statement. The vessels will be constructed at Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex in the Russian Far East.

The 159 crew members of the US Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star arrived on 22 January at McMurdo Station, following a 58-day transit from the US, marking its 23rd journey to Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze. The cutter departed its homeport of Seattle on November 26.

Russia’s largest and most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker returned from its stage one of sea trials prior to its planned delivery in May 2020. Namely, Arktika, which is still under construction at Russia’s Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg, departed St. Petersburg on December to the Gulf of Finland, returning two days later after completing testing of the ship’s generators, navigation and communications systems. 

U.S. Coast Guard's officials, announced that the "USCGC Katmai Bay" begun its ice breaking operations. In order to face the expanded ice growth and as part of the "Operation Taconite", the 40-foot ice-breaking tug started its ice breaking procedures in western Great Lakes.

Rosatom is completing the legal process of acquiring a non-controlling interest in logistics firm Delo Management Company, to further solidify its position in the Arctic. On the basis of Rosatom’s logistics assets and the assets of Delo Asset Management, it is planned to create a new Arctic container line. 

The Russian Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg launched the icebreaker rescue tag "Ivan Papanin" able to defend the Russian interests in the Arctic, equipped with cruise missiles and a deck gun. The newly-launched vessel is the first in a series of two vessels that were ordered by the Russian Ministry of Defence. The second icebreaker is scheduled for delivery in 2024.
