Finland, Sweden ink agreement for next-gen icebreakers

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA) and the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) inked a cooperation agreement for the design of the next generation of icebreakers. It is reported that the design of the icebreakers will be conducted as a joint project. However, the partners have only discussed about the design of the icebreakers and not about the possible construction of the icebreakers.

Smart LNG finances four icebreaking LNG carriers for Arctic LNG 2 project

Russian Smart LNG, a joint venture of Sovcomflot and Novatek, has locked a lease from VEB.RF to provide finance for four icebreaking LNG carriers for the Arctic LNG 2 project. Smart LNG also inked long-term charter agreements for these tankers with Arctic LNG 2, as Sovcomflot revealed in a statement. The vessels will be constructed at Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex in the Russian Far East.

Russia’s most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker completes stage one sea trials

Russia’s largest and most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker returned from its stage one of sea trials prior to its planned delivery in May 2020. Namely, Arktika, which is still under construction at Russia’s Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg, departed St. Petersburg on December to the Gulf of Finland, returning two days later after completing testing of the ship’s generators, navigation and communications systems.

Watch: Russia reveals missile-carrying icebreaker to operate in Arctic

The Russian Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg launched the icebreaker rescue tag "Ivan Papanin" able to defend the Russian interests in the Arctic, equipped with cruise missiles and a deck gun. The newly-launched vessel is the first in a series of two vessels that were ordered by the Russian Ministry of Defence. The second icebreaker is scheduled for delivery in 2024.
