Husky Energy informed that the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board announced it has lifted the notice to suspend operations for the SeaRose FPSO vessel and associated facilities. Earlier in January C-NLOPB gave a notice to the company to suspend operations, when an iceberg entered its quarter-mile exclusion zone.

This decision has been after an iceberg came too close to the SeaRose FPSO. According to Husky’s Ice Management Plan the SeaRose FPSO should have disconnected and sailed away from the threatening iceberg. That action was not taken and personnel were instructed to brace for impact.

Canadian technology company Rutter has collaborated with Statoil Canada Ltd. and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, to improve offshore oil and gas operations in harsh ice environments.

A one trillion tonne iceberg, one of the biggest ever recorded, has broken away from the Larsen C Ice Shelf, in Antarctica. The section broken is of 5,800 square km, which means the size of U.S. state of Delaware, and its volume is twice that of Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes.

The authorities recently reported that there are more icebergs this year than usual. The company’s captains keep their vessels south of the drift ice limit, so as to avoid any dangerous collisions.

The Swedish P&I Club has issued an alert to inform about a large number of icebergs drifted into the shipping lanes of the North Atlantic in recent weeks, forcing vessels to detour well to the south to avoid danger.
