The Port of Long Beach will use a $5.3 million grant from the California Air Resources Board to deploy hydrogen- and electric-powered cargo-handling equipment at two shipping terminals. The funds for the project is part of California Climate Investments, an initiative to reduce GHG emissions, improving the environment. 

A new feasibility study, led by Sandia National Laboratories with naval architect Glosten, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and DNV GL, assessed the technical, regulatory, and economic feasibility of a coastal research vessel powered solely by hydrogen fuel cells, to make marine research pollution-free.

'Energy Observer', the world's first ship powered by renewables and hydrogen, arrived at Flisvos Marina in Athens. The Greek capital is the 20th stopover of its world tour, which aims to raise awareness on energy transition. Because it is powered by renewables, and due to its double storage composed of batteries and hydrogen, the vessel can achieve energy autonomy.

Port Glasgow based Ferguson Marine along with the University of St Andrews will construct the world's first hydrogen ferry, called 'HySeas III'. The development of the vessel is expected to cost around €12.6 million, and will begin constructions on 1 July 2018. The vessel’s fuel will be produced from renewable electricity.

USCG issued an alert sharing information and recommendations regarding a unique and potentially deadly hazard that recently developed on a vessel involving the formation of dangerous levels of Hydrogen Sulfide gas within a waste oil tank. The high concentration of Hydrogen Sulfide gas was caused by the use of biodegradable cleaners and the chemical reactions

The Scottish government has awarded funding for a feasibility study on a hydrogen-powered ferry, manufactured by community-owned wind turbines, to operate in Scotland's west coast.

Norwegian ferry operator Boreal Sjø and Wärtsilä Ship Design have entered into a cooperation agreement to develop a hydrogen-powered ferry to the Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik route in Norway. The ferry will be the world's first in this size to use hydrogen as a fuel.

Hydroville showcases the use of clean fuels and aims to test hydrogen technology for applications on larger vessels. It will serve as a shuttle on the river Scheldt to provide CMB employees with environmentally-friendly transport to and from their office. 

Researchers from Columbia Engineering have developed a novel photovoltaic-powered electrolysis device that can operate as a stand-alone platform that floats on open water. Water electrolysis, the splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen fuel, is seen as a way to convert electricity from solar photovoltaics into storable hydrogen fuel.
