As the European elections take place in May 2019, the Port of Rotterdam sets out its priorities for the coming years in the field of decarbonization. The Port of Rotterdam highlights that a system change is necessary to enable the energy transition, both in Rotterdam and in the rest of Europe. Namely the Port of Rotterdam will focus on energy transition, biobased and circular economy, Carbon Capture and Storage, dydrogen and renewables, and decarbonisation of transport.

The Port of Antwerp plans to launch a hydrogen bunkering station during 2019, its CEO Jacques Vandermeiren informed during a recent forum. This development comes as the Port aspires to become multi-fuel, bringing several alternative fuels for the shipping industry, such as LNG and methanol. The Port of Antwerp is now working on the logistics of the project, while a timeline cannot be confirmed yet.

A consortium of Dutch companies, universities and knowledge institutions have teamed up on the 'Gigawatt Electrolysis Factory' project, recently kicked-off at the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology, aiming to investigate what it takes to build a gigawatt-sized electrolysis plant in the Netherlands around 2025-2030. 

Antwerp is the fifth-largest bunkering port in the world. For this reason it aims to become a Multi-Fuel Port by 2025, meaning a port where in addition to conventional fuels, alternative, more sustainable fuels can also be made available. In the short term the Port has decided to include methanol, hydrogen gas and electrical energy in the bunkering market.

GE’s Power Conversion business and fuel cell manufacturer Nedstack announced collaboration on developing hydrogen fuel cell systems for powering zero-emission cruise vessels. So far, the companies have designed the concept for a two megawatt hydrogen fuel cell power plant on an expedition vessel.

According to EIA, petroleum refineries in the US Gulf Coast rely more and more on merchant suppliers, instead of their own production, to provide the hydrogen used to reduce the sulphur content of fuel. Namely, with the demand for distillate fuel oil increasing, and sulphur content regulations becoming stricter, refineries need to use more hydrogen.

According to DNV GL’s research paper 'Hydrogen in the electricity value chain', the production of hydrogen from electrolysis will become competitive with production from natural gas. In fact, hydrogen produced from renewable energy will be an economic energy carrier to complement electricity and boost decarbonization.

In H-vision sixteen parties, mainly from the port of Rotterdam industrial area, partner in a study to explore the large-scale production and application of blue hydrogen in the Rotterdam industrial area. The goal is to supply decarbonized energy by replacing natural gas and coal with blue hydrogen. It is also studying how residual gases from the refining and chemical industry can be utilized to further enhance sustainability.
