According to Reuters, on March 4th, a fire erupted on a vessel southeast of Aden, Yemen, triggered by nearby explosions.

In this week’s “Shipping Number of the Week” from BIMCO, Chief Shipping Analyst, Niels Rasmussen, examines the cargo volumes to and from ports in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, which have fallen 21% during the first seven weeks of this year due to attacks on ships in the area.

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has released a report signalling how attacks on Red Sea shipping which have severely affected shipping through the Suez Canal, added to existing geopolitical and climate-related challenges, are re-shaping the worlds’ trade routes.

On February 19 Houthis launched an attack with two anti-ship ballistic missiles at the M/V Sea Champion, a Greek-flagged, U.S.-owned bulk carrier vessel that has delivered humanitarian aid to Yemen multiple times. 

According to international news sources, the Houthis claim that the Belize-flagged cargo ship ship they attacked on February 18, is at risk of sinking. 

In response to the persistent attacks by Houthis in the Red Sea area, international organizations with significant influence are actively seeking solutions on multiple fronts. 

Transport Malta has issued a marine notice, providing advice to ship masters proceeding through waters off the coast off Somalia.

Yemen's Houthis have claimed responsibility for a missile attack on the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier "Lycavitos" in the Gulf of Aden, as Reuters reports. 

Industry associations BIMCO, ICS, CLIA, IMCA, INTERCARGO, INTERTANKO and OCIMF have revised the security guidance applicable to navigating in the Southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

According to Reuters, on January 31, Yemen's Houthis claimed responsibility for targeting an American merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden, following their missile attack on the U.S. Navy destroyer Gravely.
