Although shipping is the cleanest form of transport, it’s not quite perfect. Cargill is a member of several groups that promote sustainability on the high seas  Recently, Cargill became the first player in the industry to publicly commit to staying away from the crafts that cause the most pollution. Cargill Ocean Transportation doesn’t own any vessels, but it does charter over 500 of them, making it one of the biggest players in the sector.  “Charterers will play an increasingly significant role in defining how the shipping industry integrates sustainability into strategy and operations,” said Alastair Fischbacher, the director of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative. “Demonstrating how shipping can strengthen, not compromise, their customers’ supply chains has the potential to become an increasingly powerful commercial tool.” According to Anda Cristescu, global operations manager for Cargill OT, integrating sustainability into the company’s business isn’t just the right thing for people and the environment – it also makes business sense. “We want to be successful in the long term, protecting the people who work on our vessels and the environment at the same time.   The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), a coalition of companies from across the global shipping industry focused on uniting commercial growth with sustainable behaviours, has released a new report, ‘Signals of Change’, that explores the potential impact of emerging technology, policy and behaviours on the future of sustainable shipping. The report was developed in partnership with Forum for the Future through its Futures Centre digital platform, as part of an ongoing initiative to collectively track innovations and respond to signals of change in the shipping industry. Among the 15 developments highlighted in the report, three unifying themes emerged from the analysis, which could evolve to have a significant impact on shipping. Port of Amsterdam has joined the Clean Shipping Platform as a new partner. Van der Weide: "We are committed to being a sustainable port. Joining this platform will enable us to share and gain knowledge and experience at an early stage and to promote and encourage making the maritime sector sustainable." Martin Dorsman, Director of the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners KVNR and Chairman of the Clean Shipping Platform, is pleased that Port of Amsterdam has joined the platform: "Ports play a key role in facilitating and promoting clean shipping and we are consequently proud that Port of Amsterdam wants to contribute actively to this process." The Research Vessel Heincke, one of the ships operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), recently received three new main engines. With the addition of particle filters and downstream exhaust-gas filter systems, the ship is now both more economical and environmentally friendlier. The 54.5-metre-long Heincke has been in service since 1990, and until recently was still running on its original engines. “The engines were essentially worn out and were no longer economical, because they burnt too much fuel and were starting to produce more and more costs for maintenance and replacement parts,” explains Marius Hirsekorn, the Logistics Coordinator for the AWI’s research vessels. In response to this problem, the ship has now been refitted with three new MAN diesel engines rated at 532 kW, essentially matching the output of the original equipment (KHD-MWM TDB-604 L 6 engines rated at 525 kW). “In addition, we’ve now equipped each engine with a particle filter and downstream aftertreatment system,” explains the AWI logistician. The engine exhaust is filtered using an SCR system, in which a catalyst is used to remove the nitrogen oxides. Hong Kong has recorded a continuous improvement in its overall air quality. The Government will introduce more measures and keep on monitoring the situation.  Chief Executive CY Leung announced the green measures in his new Policy Address, including the new legislation that requires ocean-going vessels at berth in Hong Kong to switch to low-sulphur diesel.   Low emission zones will be set up in Causeway Bay, Central and Mong Kok at the end of this year where franchised bus companies can deploy only low-emission buses. Franchised bus companies will try out single-deck electric buses in mid-2015.  The Government is working with Guangdong authorities to explore the feasibility of requiring ocean-going vessels berthing at ports in the Pearl River Delta to switch to cleaner fuel, in addition to a plan to allocate $150 million to extend the Cleaner Production Partnership Programme to encourage Hong Kong-owned factories in Guangdong to adopt cleaner production technologies.  On promoting the sustainable development of the recycling industry, the Government will introduce a Recycling Fund, while the steering committee to promote the recycling industry's sustainable development will continue to explore and formulate complementary measures.  It will also introduce legislative proposals to implement a producer responsibility scheme on waste ...

The EU's TEN-T Programme will invest almost €600,000 in a study for the promotion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) use in Greek maritime transport. The greener and cheaper LNG could contribute to reducing transport emissions and fuel supply costs in the Aegean Sea.  The study aims to promote LNG for the passenger and shipping transport between the Greek islands. It will bring together a number of key LNG value chain stakeholders with the objective to identify the technical and economic framework for LNG as marine fuel in the South Aegean. Specifically, the group will look into the main supply chain options, required retrofits and infrastructure in ports, ships and shipyards, as well as business plans for each operator.  The project will provide recommendations to the Greek government in view of supporting the legislative process in this field.  The project was selected for EU funding with the assistance of external experts under the TEN-T Annual Call 2013, priority 'Decarbonisation/oil substitution or environmental cost reduction'. As part of its product rollout strategy Eco Marine Power (EMP) announced that it has signed a support agreement with Theodosiou Bros Ltd (TRIAD Ltd) of Piraeus, Greece. This agreement between EMP and TRIAD Ltd will lead to the establishment of a technical support hub in Greece from which the companies will be able to provide jointly, a variety of technical services related to EMP's products and solutions. In particular EMP and TRIAD Ltd will now be able to offer a wide range of services and solutions to shipping companies looking to include renewable energy solutions as part of their strategy to reduce vessel emissions and lower fuel costs. These services and solutions include vessel renewable energy assessments, marine renewable energy system design, equipment installation and complete solution packages such as the Aquarius Management and Automation System (MAS) with marine solar power. In addition to signing the support agreement, TRIAD Ltd has also agreed to join the Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project & worked with EMP recently to install equipment including solar panels and batteries onboard the high speed ferry Blue Star Delos.
