IMO outlines GloBallast highlights

IMO outlines the key achievements of the GloBallast Partnerships Programme, executed by IMO in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the UNDP. The project was launched in 2007 after an initial 4-year phase and has been assisting developing countries to reduce the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens in ships’ ballast water and implement the IMO Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention.

IMO announces GloBallast successful completion

The final meeting of the GloBallast Global Project Task Force (GPTF), held in Panama City, on 16-17 March, highlighted the legacy elements of the GloBallast project, which are expected to be sustained by its main stakeholders, following the formal closure of the project, in June 2017. Specific examples include GloBallast training packages, to support the capacity-building needs of countries implementing the BWM Convention.

Training on ballast water management underway

  A training workshop on sampling and analysing ballast water is being held in Gebze, Turkey (2-4 June). Taking part are Port State Control officers and marine biologists from several Lead Partnering Countries (LPCs) of the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloBallast Partnerships Programme (GloBallast), which aims to address the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens in ships’ ballast water, thereby reducing the negative impact on marine ecosystems. The training involves shipboard sampling followed by practical laboratory analysis of the sampled ballast water. It aims to equip participants with the skills to replicate the training at a national level.Croatia, Egypt, Ghana, Jordan, Nigeria and Turkey are participating in the workshop, which is being organized by GloBallast with the support of the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications and the Tubitak Marmara Research Centre. Certifying ballast treatment systems

The certification of ballast water treatment systems is on the agenda at the 6th GloBal TestNet Forum, hosted by the Plymouth Marine Laboratory in Plymouth, UK (9-11 December). This 6th Forum is the first independent meeting organized by the GloBal TestNet group, which was initiated by the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloBallast Partnerships Programme under its Global Industry Alliance (GIA) 6 years ago. IMO’s Aicha Cherif and Antoine Blonce are observing the meeting, the first objective of which is to establish a permanent secretariat, followed by presentations by the test facilities and group discussions to enable the group to provide input to the Study on the implementation of the D-2 standard to be submitted to IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee in 2016. Turkey and Morocco: ballast water twins

IMO’s Murat Korcak has taken part in a national twinning workshop on ballast water management between Turkey and Morocco in Casablanca, Morocco (26-27 November) organized by the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) in close cooperation with the GEF-UNDP-IMO Global Ballast Water Management Programme (GloBallast) and funded through the IMO Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme. The workshop is the first example of the twinning concept under the GloBallast project, in which a Lead Partnering Country, experienced in the development of national BWM assessments and strategy, assists a country from the region to establish a national task force for the management of ballast water and explains the benefits and importance of adopting a national strategy for a smooth implementation of the Ballast Water Management Convention. Ballast water in focus at ICBWM

IMO’s Stefan Micallef, Director, Marine Environment Division, delivered the keynote address at the 7th International Conference & Exhibition on Ballast Water Management 2014 (ICBWM 2014, 5-7 November) in Singapore. The conference was supported by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloBallast Partnerships Programme. Mr. Micallef also co-chaired the pre-conference workshop (5 Nov) on challenges related to the application of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004 (BWM Convention).
