FURUNO NavSkills CAT Distant Learning System Approved by ClassNK in Japan

At the beginning of 2014, the FURUNO NavSkills CAT (Computer Aided Training) distant learning system has been approved by ClassNK as fulfilling the requirements for ECDIS type specific familiarisation training specified by the ISM code subsections of 6.3 and 6.5. ClassNK has evaluated the workstation and training software application, which are provided as part of the Computer Aided Training concept, as well as the training system support provided by FURUNO and verified that the training system meets the standards for contents and method for equipment familiarisation training. In addition, ClassNK has approved, as the first company in the world, JMS (Japan Maritime Science) - a subsidiary of the Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK LINE) - as a training facility that provides ECDIS type specific familiarisation training fulfilling the training requirements by using the NavSkills CAT system. By combining the two certifications on both the training system and training facility from ClassNK, the training provision based on FURUNO NavSkills CAT by the training provider is perceived as being in full compliance with the requirements for ECDIS familiarisation. FURUNO launches new ECDIS

FMD-3200 and FMD-3300 Japanese manufacturer Furuno is to launch a new ECDIS, said to deliver a significant enhancement over its predecessor in terms of user interface and functionality, in readiness for forthcoming carriage requirements.The new model comes in two versions, the FMD-3200 with 19in LCD display and FMD-3300 with 23.1in screen. It is said to offer a streamlined chart management scheme, providing easy chart management independent of the chart providers. It will be compatible with Jeppesen Dynamic Licensing and support the Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO), and satisfies requirements for paperless ship operation.According to Furuno, the FMD-3200 and FMD-3300 employ intelligently arranged graphic user interface elements: a status bar and an instant access bar that deliver task-based operation scheme to give the operator direct access to necessary operational procedure. The status bar at the top of the screen provides operating status, including modes of operation and presentation. The instant access bar on the left edge of the screen provides quick access to functions available in each of the ECDIS operating modes. ClassNK approves first Type Specific ECDIS course

Type Specific Training Course approval for an ECDIS Training Course offered by FURUNO ClassNK has issued its first Type Specific Training Course approval for an ECDIS Training Course offered by FURUNO INS Training Centre Singapore.The approval, which coincides with the opening of the new training centre, certifies that the course offered by the centre complies with the classification society's new Standard for Maritime Education & TrainingNew requirements for the installation of ECDIS systems will be phased in from 1 July 2012, after which vessels will be required to navigate using ECDIS as their primary chart system.As part of this process, masters and deck officers will be required to undergo adequate training and prove their understanding and proficiency in using the new systems.In addition to the generic ECDIS training required by the STCW Convention and Code, the governments of the UK and Ireland, as well as the Paris MOU, require masters and all deck officers on flag vessels which make use of ECDIS systems as their primary means of navigation to undergo Type Specific ECDIS training for the ECDIS systems used onboard their vessels.In recognition of this growing demand ClassNK developed new certification standards for Type Specific ECDIS training programmes, that ...
