MES to modify engines of large container vessels for fuel saving

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding and 100% owned subsidiary MES Technoservice have received an order from Taiwan ship owner for fuel-efficiency modifications to the main engine (Mitsui-MAN B&W 12K98MC/M6) of three large type container vessels. In recent years the rising costs of fuel oil together with the need to reduce the environmental impact of shipping vessels have sharply increased the practice of slow steaming especially for large container vessels whose annual fuel oil costs can run into the billions of Yen. The modifications to be carried out, referred to as "Derating", involves reducing the MCO output by modifying the main engine and turbocharger. The modification will increase the cylinder P.max as well as the mean effective pressure thereby increasing combustion efficiency. This results in a significant reduction in fuel consumption, even greater than the method of turbo-charger cut out which has been applied to several large type container vessels in recent years. Depending on the vessel operation patterns, the expected payback period for the modification work is one-two year. The above modification work is to be carried out later this year. First carbon propeller debuts on merchant vessel

ClassNK and Nakashima Propeller have announced the world's first installation of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) propeller on the main propulsion system of a merchant vessel. The CFRP propeller was installed on the Taiko Maru, a domestic 499 GT chemical tanker owned by Sowa Kaiun YK by Marugame-based Koa industry Co., Ltd. in May 2014. The CFRP propeller installed on the vessel was developed and produced by Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd. with support from ClassNK, which granted approval for the design and manufacturing process of the CFRP propeller, as well as provided research and funding support for the project as part of the ClassNK Joint R&D for Industry Program. Research and development on the use CFRP propellers for merchant vessels in Japan was supported by the Nippon Foundation and the Japan Ship Machinery & Equipment Association (JSMEA) from 2007 to 2011. From 2012, this research continued as a joint research project carried out by Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd, the University of Tokyo School of Engineering, Japan's National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI), NYK Line, MTI Co., Ltd., Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, and ClassNK as part of ClassNK's Joint R&D for Industry program. Despite its ultra-lightweight composition, CFRP exhibits the same, ...

Project to develop monitoring system for Mitsui-MAN B&W engines

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, its subsidiary, MES Technoservice and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai have embarked on a joint research project to develop the "Condition-Based Engine Monitoring System" for the Mitsui-MAN B&W diesel engines. The system will realize preventive maintenance by the early detection of any abnormalities of the electronically controlled diesel engines for marine use. These days electronically controlled type engines have become the industry leader. Compared with the conventional mechanical type engines, electronically controlled engines obtain a great amount of data from the many sensors installed on the engines. However, this increase of available data can put a strain on the resources of the shipping companies. Only experienced crew members can monitor the data taken from the sensors and then judge the status of the engine condition. The goal of this joint research project is to ensure safe operation of vessels while reducing the operating costs. The data taken from the sensors will be automatically analyzed to prevent any system failures and diagnose the performance data to extend overhaul intervals. In 2004, MES introduced an online marine engine support system called e-GICS (electronic Global Internet Customer Support). The system provides performance diagnosis, maintenance diagnosis of main parts etc. for Mitsui ...
