As the Maritime Prefecture of the Channel and the Mediterranean informed, the ferry 'Ulysses' has been released from the container ship 'Virginia', on October 11. This comes after the first attempt to separate the ships earlier this week, which was unsuccessful.

The ferry 'Ulysses', which collided with the container ship 'CLS Virginia', tried to maneuver in order to separate from the container ship. The ship put its engines back, but the situation did not change. Experts appointed by the shipowners and from the Maritime Prefect are in the area, studying other ways to move the ships.

The defense team of the cruise ship Captain who was charged over breaking the sulphur limit in the Mediterranean over the summer, said that the European rules unfairly distinguished between the limits applying to cruise ships and these for cargo ships.

After the container ship 'CSL Virginia' collided with the ferry 'Ulysse', the container ship's hull was ruptured. As a result, a bunker spill of around 4 kilometres has been reported off Corsica. Italy and Monaco are assisting France in the clean up operation. The collision took place on Sunday, October 7.

France, Portugal, Spain and Germany agreed to take in migrants from the Mediterranean rescue ship Aquarius sailing off the coast of Malta, France said, after Italy refused to let the vessel dock. According to Malta, a patrol boat will transfer the migrants in international waters and then to the island, from where they will be sent to the four other European Union states.

French and British fisherman have achieved compromise over a dispute on scallop fishing in the English Channel, according to an official form the French Agriculture Ministry. The dispute concerned the size of boats that are allowed to fish in Baie de Seine waters, where scallops can be found in large quantities.

The Wallem-managed ship, 'Coral Leader', provided assistance to the French Coastguard, in the rescue of a crew from a sailing yacht on August 26. The yacht was in distress in the Mediterranean Sea, just off Corsica. All five people were successfully airlifted to safety.

On the sidelines of the Second Energy Interconnections summit on 27 July, European leaders signed the Lisbon Declaration, aiming to strengthen regional cooperation in the framework of the Energy Union and better integrate the Iberian Peninsula into the internal energy market.

The European Commission has approved a French project promoting electricity generation from tidal energy, which was found to be in line with EU State aid rules, while it is expected to contribute further the EU's energy and climate goals without distorting competition in the Single Market.

In late May, the European Commission put forward a proposal to ban 10 single-use plastic products most often found on Europe's beaches and seas. However, a number of European countries have already gone ahead with their own laws to combat plastic pollution.
