Every year, as part of the Jeanne-d'Arc mission, third-year students of the Naval School collect humanitarian cargo, sportswear, school materials, medicines, toys and books, which will be given during a journey around the world.

Twelve Indians were rescued from a sinking vessel in the Persian Gulf by a French Navy ship on November 20. The aircraft unit of the frigate, a Panther helicopter, performed rescue hoist maneuvers and rescue the seafarers from the capsized vessel. The vessel had capsized minutes ago, forcing its Indian crew to cling to the overturned hull.

The French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announced a national ports strategy and ports mergers, aiming to face challenges that the creation of shipping alliances cause. Namely, France will redefine the financial relations between the State, the local authorities and the major seaports.

French cruise company Ponant and Saint-Nazaire-based maritime shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique have teamed up to test a revolutionary sailing system on the company’s vessel 'Le Ponant', expected to significantly reduce energy consumption tied to propulsion and thus minimize the operation's environmental footprint. 

At the end of 2017, the Port of Marseille Fos established a working group, gathering players from the LNG sector to find ways to develop LNG as a marine fuel. The working group will also attempt to reduce the impact of ships in the Port. Specifically, the working group will study the relevance of the logistics options for LNG bunkering in the Port of Marseille Fos.

REMPEC, the IMO-administered marine pollution emergency response centre in the Mediterranean, has concluded a study to evaluate the costs and benefits of implementing a SECA in the Mediterranean region. It found that additional costs will be needed, but health and environmental benefits would be significant.

During a MEPC 73 meeting at IMO headquarters, France presented the results of its impact assessment of a possible ECA in the Mediterranean. The findings revealed that a combined ECA which addresses sulphur and nitrogen oxides at the same time has the greatest positive effect in terms of reduced emissions.

After the collision of the ferry 'Ulysse' with the container ship ‘CSL Virginia’ oil had spilled along the Corsica, in France’s Riviera. Now, reports mention that thick oil has been washed up along the beaches, which volunteers try to get rid of with shovels and sacks.

The ferry 'Ulysse' has left the Corsica and is now heading to Tunisia, as it got clearance to leave the scene of its collision with the container ship 'CSL Virginia' off the coast of Corsica in the Mediterranean, on October 7. The containership has not moved and is currently at anchor surrounded by anti-pollution boom.

India and France announced their plan to launch satellites aimed for maritime surveillance, as French space agency CNES chief Jean-Yves Le Gall informed. The satellites will focus on the Indian Ocean and they will constitute India's largest space cooperation with any country.
