According to APL, the situation on board APL Vancouver is progressing favourably and is now under control. Furthermore, all crewmembers remain safe, while APL is in continuous contact with the vessel’s Master and local authorities to coordinate all necessary actions. The fire broke out on the container ship, in one of its cargo holds, on January 31.

The container ship Yantian Express that burst into flames on 3 January has reached the Port of Freeport, Bahamas. The ships is now waiting for clearance to enter the port, and then the recovery and assessment efforts of the cargo will begin. Cargo in the ship’s first 12 bays, and some of the cargo in the two holds beneath those bays, was impacted. However, a precise estimation of the damage is not possible at the moment.

According to the company's statement, a fire broke out in the engine room onboard Maersk’s Panamax containership Olga Maersk on January 29, while the vessel was on route from Panama to Cartagena. All crew are safe. The fire, which was contained to the engine room, has been extinguished following fire fighting procedures.

Emergency response procedures were activated, while local authorities coordinate all necessary actions to ensure the fire is extinguished. However, there are reports that fire is still ongoing, with all the crewmembers being safe.

An explosion took place onboard the Aframax tanker LR2 Poseidon, on 28 January, Tuzla Ship Repair Yard, Turkey. Because of the explosion, two workers died, while 10 are in the hospital injured, with one of them being in critical condition. After the explosion a fire also broke out. Fire fighters went on scene and were able to put out the fire during the day.

Hapag-Lloyd, German liner shipping company, declared General Average concerning Yantian Express containership, that was stroke by fire. In conjunction with declaring General Average, the owners will set Average Adjusters that will be responsible for coordinating the collection of securities ans all documentation needed from parties that have interests in cargo, containers, vessel and fuel.

In its annual Cargo Claims Review, the Swedish Club informed of a cargo fire caused by moving cargo due to inclement weather conditions. The case highlighted the importance of detailed plans and discussions among Master, Chief officer, technical manager or charterer, when it is about critical cargo operations. 

Hapag-Lloyd informed that after the fire onboard the container ship 'Yantian Express' was brought under control, the responsible salvage master from the company Smit decided to sail the vessel to the Port of Freeport, in Bahamas. Upon arrival, the recovery and assessment efforts of the cargo can continue in a safer environment.

After a fire broke out in one container on the deck of the Yantian Express, earlier in January, photos have now emerged depicting the damage that the fire caused to the Yantian Express' cargo. Now, the situation is under control and the ship is being towed to Halifax.

The ultra large container ship 'Maersk Honam' is to be shipped to South Korea for rebuilding, nine months after she sustained a major fire resulting in five fatalities. The heavy-lift vessel Xin Guan Hua wil transport the 228.5-meter-long sound section, from midship to stern, to Hyundai Heavy Industries.
