Finland & Greece ratify the ILO MLC 2006

34 ILO member States in total have ratified this landmark Convention On January 2013, the Government of Finland and Greece deposited with the International Labour Office the instrument of ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006)They are the 33rd and 34th ILO member State to ratify this landmark Convention, which sets out decent working and living conditions for seafarers while creating conditions of fair competition for shipowners.The MLC, 2006 will enter into force on 20 August 2013, that is 12 months after the date on which it was ratified by 30 Members with a total share in the world gross tonnage of ships of at least 33 per cent.For more information on how many countries and when have ratified the IL MLC 2006, click hereFinland has under its flag vessels totalling 1.5 million gross tons representing 0.15 per cent of the world tonnage of ships. Finland is calling for easier terms aimed at reducing the sulphur content of fuels

Minister asks for flexibility in the implementation of 0.10% sulphur cap Finland is calling for easier terms in a proposed directive aimed at reducing the sulphur content of fuels used by ships at sea, according to a report in the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.According to the report, a letter sent to the Commission asks for assurances that sufficient 0.10% fuel fuel be available by the time the directive takes effect in 2015. Environment minister Ville Niinistö is quoted as saying: "If these measures do not succeed Finland feels that the scheduling of the directive needs to be reconsidered. 48 ships await icebreaker assistance in the Gulf of Finland

Icebreaker assistance As of today, April 7th (8:00am - MT), there are 48 cargo ships in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland that requested icebreaker assistance, the Port Authority of Big Port St. Petersburg said.The St. Petersburg PA reports of total 66 merchant ships currently located in the water area, 18 of them - in motion.Over the past day 23 ships have reached the entrance buoy of St Petersburg port. 22 vessels are westbound from the Gulf area, 23 ships called at the port and 18 - departed.
