The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authoirty announced that a $50,000 fined is imposed on the Mediterranean Shipping Company for polluting the Tema Port environment with heavy fuel oil discharged from MSC Alexa on May 10, 2016.

Mobil Oil New Zealand has been fined $288,000 for a major heavy oil spill into Tauranga Harbour which occured last year, on April 27,2015. Oil discharged from two holes in a rusted lateral pipe during bunkering resulting in significant pollution as between 3000 and 4000 litres of heavy fuel leaked

The US Department of Justice announced that a German company and operator of the M/V Cornelia was charged for violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) by failing to maintain an accurate ship record about the disposal of oil-contaminated waste. The defendant is also charged with presenting falsified records to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The US Department of Justice has announced that under a consent decree, a Louisiana company will pay $615,000 in federal penalties for crude oil spills and other Clean Water Act violations, pay Louisiana $100,000 for civil penalties and response costs, and carry out remedial measures to prevent future spills. Among other things, the company was accused of failure to comply with a US Coast Guard order addressing one of the cleanup efforts.

The Norwegian shipping company DSD Shipping (DSD) was sentenced to pay a total corporate penalty of $2.5 million as a result of its convictions in Mobile, Alabama, for obstructing justice, violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS), tampering with witnesses and conspiring to commit these offenses.

United States District Court accepted the guilty plea of Doorae Shipping Co., LTD, a South Korean maritime operations company, and sentenced the company to pay a fine of $750,000, a community service payment of $200,000, and a term of two years of probation for the failure to maintain an accurate oil record book, in violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, and making false statements to the U.S. Coast Guard concerning the discharge of oil contaminated bilge water.

US Department of Justice informs that two German shipping companies were sentenced to pay a total of $1.25 million in fines and a $250,000 community service for failure to maintain an accurate oil record book, in violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships and for tampering with witnesses by persuading them to provide false statements to the U.S. Coast Guard concerning a bypass hose on the vessel that was being used to discharge oil into the sea.

Two shipping companies and two engineers have been indicted for crimes related to the illegal discharge of oily wastewater from a cargo ship known as the M/V Gallia Graeca, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.

The California Air Resources Board has fined the China Navigation Co. Pte. Ltd. $129,500 for failure to switch its engines over from heavy diesel “bunker” fuel to cleaner, low-sulfur fuel when close to the California coast, as required by state law.
