After two weeks of hearings ,the U.S. investigators have gathered evidence and reports referring to El Faro's tragedy which sank on October 1, 2015, after losing propulsion during Hurricane Joaquin. According to the USCG, it was the worst cargo shipping disaster investigation, involving a U.S.-flagged vessel in more than three decades.

NTSB has announced that the investigative team aboard the research vessel Atlantis who located the El Faro’s voyage data recorder has determined it will not be possible to recover the VDR during the current mission.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has located the voyage data recorder belonging to the El Faro, the cargo ship that sank during Hurricane Joaquin. El Faro’s VDR was found early Tuesday morning in 15,000 feet of water, about 41 miles (36 nautical miles) northeast of Acklins and Crooked Islands, Bahamas, by a team of investigators and scientists using remotely operated undersea search equipment.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a press release stating that the research vessel Atlantis will depart Charleston on 18 April to search the area where the cargo vessel El Faro sank on 1 October 2015 with the loss of all 33 persons on board.

The families of three El Faro crew members who died when the cargo ship sank during a hurricane in October 2015, have accepted settlements of at least $500,000 from the ship’s owner, according to court documents filed this week.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced that it would launch a second expedition to search for evidence in its investigation of the loss of the cargo ship EL FARO, which sank in the Atlantic during a hurricane on October 1, 2015.

The U.S. Coast Guard has scheduled to hold a public Marine Board of Investigation hearing from February 16 to 26 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center in Jacksonville, Florida as part of its investigation into the sinking of the container ship El Faro.

As part of its continuing investigation into the sinking of the cargo ship El Faro in the Atlantic Ocean in October, the National Transportation Safety Board has opened the accident docket and released underwater images and video of the vessel.

The video documentation of the cargo ship El Faro and the associated debris field has been completed but the vessel’s voyage data recorder was not located.
