MEPC 78 was held remotely from 6 to 10 June 2022, and DNV presented the highlights of the meeting, which included the finalization of technical guidelines for the upcoming EEXI, CII and SEEMP regulations; approval of a proposal for a sulphur emission control area (SECA) in the Mediterranean Sea; and further discussions on the revision of the IMO GHG Strategy scheduled for 2023.

Bureau Veritas (BV) has announced the development of a new notation, CII REALTIME. The notation will support shipowners to provide reliable and up to date data related to DCS and CII of their ships/fleet in a simplified and consistent process.

While there has been some recent progress in the fight against shipping emissions, there are still serious challenges, relating to cost and lack of compliance with standards, noted Keith B. Letourneau, Partner Maritime, BLANKROME, at the 2022 GREEN4SEA Forum, warning that without mandatory reductions, GHG emissions from the maritime sector could increase between 50-250% by 2050.

The IMO’s MEPC 76 last summer left the shipping industry divided regarding the level of ambition for reducing shipping’s environmental footprint, but the adoption of EEXI and CII measures was the main tangible outcome for the future of shipping emissions.

2022 is going to be a year of focus on the environment. Following COP26, the message is clear; we need to act now against the climate change and for the maritime industry, IMO has already paved the way with the enforcement of strict environmental rules; nonetheless, maritime safety will always be a key concern for the industry.

As compliance will benefit to a large extent from co-operation between shipowners and charterers, BIMCO has developed a new clause to address the changes.

NAPA has shared the preliminary results of its new research that explores the potential effect of EEXI on the transportation capacity, total emissions and carbon intensity of the global bulker fleet.

IMO’s EEXI and CII measures slated for 2023 to reduce emissions may be too slow to enforce change by only factoring in operational considerations, as maritime organisation RightShip announced.
