INTERCARGO released its 2023-2024 Annual Review, shedding light to initiatives and addressing critical challenges of dry bulk shipping.

During the 2024 SAFETY4SEA Athens Forum, Captain Panagiotis Nikiteas, HSQE Manager/DPA/CSO, Maran Dry Management Inc, addressed recent developments in the dry bulk shipping sector and discussed the establishment of DBCE and DryBMS.

Ian J McLeod, Managing Director at the Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence (DBCE), shares insights into the new DryBMS platform. He highlights that this self-assessment tool can help ship managers evaluate their performance and advance the industry beyond mere compliance.

INTERCARGO is actively encouraging its members, including shipowners, managers, and operators, to join the newly launched Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS) portal.

The Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence (DBCE) has launched the Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS) platform to improve safety management. 

Vetting process is the tool to monitor a ship company or a ship and involves a review of the vessel’s technical and operational characteristics, and its safety and compliance record. The goal of vessel vetting is to ensure that the ship is safe and compliant with relevant regulations.

During the 2021 SAFETY4SEA Virtual Forum, Panel 7 discussed about the challenges  concerning the safety of dry bulk carriers, as well as key alarming trends. The panelists analyzed the best practices to develop enhanced safety culture onboard dry bulk carriers, and provided lessons learned to ensure a safe navigation. 

The introduction of DryBMS initiates a new era for dry Bulk operators; it reminds us the times back when TMSA entered the liquid cargo sector. Thus, it is interesting to draw parallels and find key differences into these two milestone tools which aim to drive excellence in the maritime industry.

The road from minimum compliance to performance excellence requires a self-assessing process and reporting. In essence, the DryBMS will demand more involvement from shore side personnel, as its implementation requires a series of evidence to verify scoring.

The Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS) includes 30 Subject Areas in total, some of which may require more focus in comparison to others. This is why they are also referred as ‘Priority subject areas’.
